I remember reading about that a year or so ago.

Bottom line: Government is pushing for more fuel efficient vehicles, electric, hybrid, etc. The excise tax on gas is what pays for road repair and such. They made everyone start using ethanol so they'd get worse MPG, fill up more often, generate more tax revenue, and help subsidize corn farmers... now they're giving tax incentives for electric vehicles and hybrids which works against that plan and offsets the extra revenue.

Unfortunately, they'll probably combine the two (existing excise tax and then ADD the per-mile-driven tax) so we'll get hit twice. This will be another reason to keep existing (and reinstate old) annual emissions requirements so they can record your mileage and tax you when you register your car.

Hmm, so let me get this straight.

First they push for more Fuel efficient vehicles.. but realize

"sh*t, we done goofed, now that people don't have to go to the station as often we are losing money. How on earth are we going to make that money back? HEY! Lets tax every hard working Citizen that drives back and forth to work every day even more money! While we let all the lazy jobless individuals collect their Welfare checks. BRILLIANT!"

This has been a statist's fantasy for many years, at least 12 (since I started paying attention) probably longer than that.

My local water utility did the same thing... Said we all needed to conserve water because of the drought. We did. Now they say there isn't enough revenue to pay for maintenance and repairs so they have to raise our rates. Everyone's saying that the next time they ask us to conserve, we're gonna run or faucets 24/7.

I drive a minimum of 100 miles a day but on average I am burning 3/4 of my 12 gallon gas tank everyday mon- fri for work... this would destroy me.

I wonder if they would apply different rates for: Utility vehicles, SUVs, Trucks, Hybrids, Motorcycles, or if it would solely by number of axles/wheels.
