How you figure that? The coils generate the spark energy. The MSD is just a triggering device. Doesn't matter how many channels you use. Even MSD's own literature says the DIS2 is for 4 cylinder applications and the DIS4 is for 6 and 8 cylinders. The DIS4 has 4 channels. To use it with an 8 cylinder, you split each channel. Same with a 6 cylinder, you just leave one channel unused. The only benefit to using a DIS4 with a 4-banger is that if you have a stand-alone, you can trigger each channel individually, giving you timing control for each individual cylinder. That's only needed if you're building an all out race motor and you need to adjust the spark timing to compensate for intake manifold "timing" (which can be a problem with NA cars with log style, side entry intake manifolds. The AirRam manifold trys to fix this with a tapered design).

you can use a dis-2 and 4 coils and have them fire individually. they have a new feature where you select a wasted spark system or individual system.

Yes, I had a DIS4 on my daily car for years. You just don't hook up the leads for the 5/6 coils. Do a search. I posted a wiring diagram for a COP using the MSD, but you can do the same to a stock coil setup. The wiring is really easy. Even the DIS comes with pretty decent instructions.

Are you sure you need one? It's worthless unless you're seriously boosted.
