How often do you check your mirrors?

I have noticed during the last few weeks quite a few people that have failed to yield the left lane on the highway to emergency vehicles. I am talking about a cop/fire truck/ambulance not only getting close enough to slow down behind a vehicle(mostly suvs and trucks) but needing to wait a little before the vehicle in front of them moves. Usually the left lane is open enough that they could get over if they let off the gas/turned off cruise. How inattentive does one have to be in order to completely miss the flashing lights accompanied by a siren?

since 90% of my travel involves passing another car, I live in my mirrors. I know where the cars are so I can safely and easily switch lanes as needed.

I also try to be courteous; if another car is flying up from behind and I'm in the fast lane, I switch lanes to offer them the straight away. You never know if they're being an ass or if they have a medical emergency, so I err on the side of caution.

The bulk of the time it's because people don't care, or aren't aware of the fact that they need to immediately vacate the passing lane. "I'm going to take my own fair time, and don't rush me" is the mindset. A lot of the times this does involve not paying attention due to carelessness however.
Personally, I check it all the time. Typically the rearview mirror for situational awareness, and when I'm changing lanes, the side mirrors.

I just drive 30mph faster than everyone so I dont have to check, I know by the time I move over they have cleared my side.

what majik and strikeeagle said

I think there ought to be a rule that emergency vehicles should be able to give a car a little love tap with the bumper guard, if they won't get the F out of their way in an emergency. Though I'm not sure if that would wake up somebody deep in a txting discussion on facebook . . .

haha, that's when I slow down by gently lifting off the accelerator, down to the legal minimum.

^ I have no problem with that unless you're in the fast lane (passing lane)
