I used a larger pliers and pulled straight up. the trick is to remove them while the base plate is still bolted down. It makes it MUCH easier.
Putting them back in you just line them up and tap LIGHTLY on them with a hammer.
If you need to, you can use the plastic base plate as leverage to "pry" them up with the pliers. Just grab the "lip" of the U shaped pieces. do NOT grab the sides of them, as that just squeezes them tighter.
