Lets say red car guy attempts to do this to you. What would you do?
I won't bother downshifting, probably won't floor it either but I would rather not brake.
I'll just keep going my pace or just a bit faster. If he goes in front of me w/o making me slow down (I'm usually on cruise), that's fine.

Great illustration!
If there's a big spot behind me, and they try to cut in front of me? Not a chance in the world unless they plan on swapping paint. Considering my car is 10 years old and theirs is generally less than 2 years old, I generally win.
If there's someone on my bumper and they're already ahead of me, sure, I probably let them in.
I tend to leave a good bit of room between me and the car in front of me anyhow, so people tend to get in there more often than not.
I'm also generally more considerate if they use their blinker properly. No sympathy for those who don't have it on, or who have had it on since they left home.

i'll let them in if they are already doing my speed or faster. that said, my system fails when they mash it to get into my lane, then brake down to 5mph less than i was already doing. makes me mad without fail.

Today on the way home there was a brush fire on the side of the frontage road . . . so the local P.D. shut off an exit and the frontage road during rush hour, and left it closed after the fire was out until all the fire trucks drove away.
I had my blinker on for a good half-mile (in first gear) and the people in the #3 lane wouldn't let me over.
I said, OK you want to be hard?
I turned off the blinker.
Next time a gap opened up beside me, I put my car into it at Warp Speed 10 and jammed the brakes.
How hard would it have been for them to let me in when they were expecting it?

Great illustration
After looking at it carefully I realised that he (red car) would have the right of way in Europe. It is called a zipper and you may merge early, but you don't have to. I usually let people in. But like wheel of steel I hate it if people speed up to overtake and than slow down too much
