Is it polish or wax? I always wondered about this because usually I just wash my car and apply a coat of wax. So if I added a coat of polish in between those 2 steps, would my paint be even shinier?

smooth = shiny. However you get there, the smoother it is, the more reflective it will be.

Polish restores the shine of the paint and also removes the defect and wax in the other hand protects the finish.

By the way, its always a good practice to clay the paint before applying polish or wax as part of the prep stage.
