I was highly considering that exact same vent before I had my car painted. I won't go back and do it now, but if I had the time and money before painting my car, I would have gotten that.

REDZ... some people like the idea of keeping their engine bay clean, at least somewhat. Having the motorized vent would prevent water from getting in and rusting everything in your engine bay. It's amazing how dirty everything can get if you have a vent on the hood. Consider how often your car sits in a parking lot or driveway when it's raining...

You know, I've not had anything rust under my hood.

I've got a buddy here in my APT complex that's had a vented hood on his RX7 for like 3 years, no rust.

well I know people who have had rust... I'm not talking about on the car, but excessive rust on headers, strut bar, some bolts, stuff like that…. But then again, the 3 cars I'm talking about are all mitsubishi’s… must just be those JDM’s.

and it wouldn't be that ugly if it was molded in, not just bolted on top. I think I could have made it look real nice wink.gif have it molded so that the hood smoothly flows into that V shape on the front of the vent. Blah, that looks so tacky the way they just bolted it on like that :-/

that is what I was thinking.. mounting it from under the hood, then molding the top in..

Turn it around.

well, porsche has been playing with movable scoops and wings for a while.. not only on the 996 but on the old 928. At certain speeds, the radiator would get partially blocked off to lower the amount of drag through the engine compartment.

I like the idea, but what I was thinking.. is have it motorized.. So, that when you hit a certain speed.. or temperature.. it would automagicaly open..

So, say at 60kph(40mph).. it is closed, as there is not much of a air stream.. but have it open at say 100kph(65mph).. it opens..

Kind of how the porsches' have the spoiler that raises at certain speeds

That would be cool. You could hook up a thermistor or some kind of speed sensor to it. I think the thermister for temp would be the easiest since it looks like the stock set up for the vent is controled by a simple potentiometer. You would just have to see what the resistance value is for the pot that comes with it and find a thermistor that matched that value or add a resistor in parallel or seriese to make the thermistor match it. Go for it man, great project!
