I have read every post that has the word mirror in it and searched for HMA too, and still can't find what Im looking for!

Could somebody post a DIY or diagram of how the side mirrors are made up.

I have the complete mirror units off the car, but I want to pull the mirror piece out, tape up the motor, sand down the outer shell and respray my mirrors.

Yes i know i could just tape the mirror, but going from white to black I would like to do a proper job.

I have tried prying at the four joints behind the mirror, but I'm not sure if that is the correct way to do it and dont want to break it

i spoke to the local parts manager, he reckons its a one way clip that will more than likely break when prying the mirror section out, he also says pushing on the mirror making that clicking noise damages the plastic gear teeth.

so im taking the masking route.

if anybody else can prove him wrong i would be happy

Assuming the RD1 and RD2 mirrors are the same, the mirror itself pops off. I broke mine popping it off and ended up buying a new one from hyundai for $20 which they had on-hand. The housing unbolts after popping off the panel on the inside of the door. There's a power connector to unclip and you're done.

okay i got the part of popping off the triangle inside, unbolting the the 3 bolts and pinching the little plastic clip to take off the mirror unit.

if you look under exterior trim section, the mirror piece is labelled 5... now there is a black surround that holds the mirror in there, and obviosly has the clips that are plugged into the motor labelled 6...

are you saying you managed to pull just the single piece of mirror out without its black backpiece, or did you unclip/break it off the motor?

if the mirror pane pops out i'll give it another go, otherwise its rather expensive for me to replace the mirror section, R250ZAR a piece!!
