I have just realized that the wiper blades on my car are around 3 years old, and so this got me thinking, how often do you guys change yours? The recommendation is every year, but that doesn't seem necessary?

I think it depends on what kind of wipers you get. If you get cheap $2 walmart brands, then you'll have to replace them more often than getting a good quality set.

Plain rubber can be expected to max. out at ~5 years useful life. Silicone might last longer.

Replace them when they no longer function due to damage or deterioration.
