So I was talking with Socks on IM almost a month ago now about different hoods and how I like hood scoops and he likes vents, and I was telling him how I really liked the scoop on the post-2000 subaru imprezas. We got to talking about it and I started looking around on e-bay to see what prices were, and it seemed like a lot of people were selling stock scoops for around $75, which was more then I could afford after paint supplies and such. Well I found one guy who didn't have any bids on his yet, so I placed a bid, as I recall it was $15 (mighta been $25) and miraculously no one bid against me. So I ended up getting this scratched up, black 2002 Subaru Impreza (non-WRX) hood scoop shipped to me for $25.
Over the past few days I have been carefully templating out the scoop, dremeling a large hole in my hood (while imagining how much a slip on the top would cost), removing some supports, sanding, priming, painting and clear coating the scoop, and attatching it to the car using, of all things, storm window attatchment brackets. I ended up having to use those because the bolts that the scoop uses to attatch are below the plane of the hood, so I needed an L shape to extend back up and put pressure on the bottom of the hood. It ended up coming together really well though, especially considering I'm still relatively inexperienced with the dremel and this was my first time painting with the exception of about 10 minutes worth of model car spraybombing. The finish is fairly nice, although I have a few bad spots because of drips that occurred when my finger pressed down into the spray path during color and clear, but they didn't end up being bad enough to warrant redoing it. It's also not as shiny as I had hoped, but I'll write that off to the fact that it's plastic.
Please excuse the horrible salt stains on my car, it's winter in michigan, and I haven't had a chance to wash it recently. It'll get a good bath this weekend.
So without further ado:

(if you get here and there's no image, wait a minute and refresh. I'm in the process of uploading on 28.8k dialup... oh the joys of being home for break.)
