Convertable Gen 1 Tiburon
ok i was searching craigslist and this guy near my house has a 98 tib that he just rolled.
he wants 500 bucks for it and it has 89000 miles it is also a five speed. now what i was thinking just for S&G and for my own ammusement , that i would cut the top off it and make it a convertable. i probably wont drive it every where but i would like it for parts so why not just chop the top? now i know that the structural integrity of the car is compramised but if i do this ill probably put a cage in it then when i junk the car and salvage parts i could have a trany engine and whatever else i want plus a cage let me know what you think ill probably go see how bad the car is tommorrow. by the way he said the car still drives but the top is all pusshed down.... sad.gif i think it would be cool seeing that first gen coupe demo car that was a convertable that was never put into production....let me know what you think
thanks

ohhh yeah! fing02.gif fing02.gif fing02.gif so gonna do it i hope he still has it i talked to him last night but the way people out here are you never know.... yaeh i was just gonna hack the top off and weld in a few bars across the back and a roll bar for safety, and weld up the supports . it will be fun playing with a project car i dont really care about all i want is the engine & trany.
ill let you know what the shape of the car is in tommorrow then we can talk about parts but i dont need any thing from the windows up if its still good ill lett you know.

Just a hint. Strenghten the body first before cutting the roof off or there will be no point in welding anything after you cut the roof off. The fram will deform if you don't support it before you cut it.
REALLY spend your time building up the frame, do some searching, the tib is a unibody design, meaning, it gets structural support from the top of the frame, so the second a tib is rolled, it means core frame damage. do me a favor, the secodn you cut the top off, measure the distance from the cuts (front to back). if the length shortens, do yourself a favor, and junk it.

best fo luck doin git the "right" and safely driveable way....
but if you're anything like me (and it kinda sounds like you are) I'd just hack away and give a rat's ass about the core frame (so long as I had a perfectly fien runnign tiburon in the garage nect to it...) then I'd weld away and come up with crazy contraptions for us RDTiburon addicts to drool over or own you on. I'd make it look like the convertable s2000's with the roll cage and put speakers int he seat head rests like the pontiac fiero and other cars...
take out the back seats for more structural support room to play with. Make it a 2-seater convertable sports car (not coupe).
Good luck, and go crazy with it!
