You think the way the pods on the 2nd gens are engineered, they get too hot? I was gonna drop $160 for two sets of PIAA Super Plasmas.

I have had my passenger side go out two of the three times that I replaced bulbs. And my sister has the same year and her passenger low beam and fog lamp went out about the same time. I have the following:

2000
Auto
Head Unit, Amp, Subs
Replaced all other front bulbs, none of which went out yet.
2 sets of Shark Racing bulbs went out

Hmm...

The only bulbs I lost were on the Passenger side.

Maybe we should restart this and add that fact? What side they were lost on?

Wattage, to me is a BIG factor. I once plugged in a 'blue' headlight bulb that was 100W - NEVER again (instant burning wire smell). I pay REAL careful attention to wattage now.

2001
Auto
No Stereo Mod
No electric mods (unless factory alarm/remote keyless counts)
Equal blowouts on both sides

(2)Factory bulbs, (2)cheapy groupbuy blue bulbs,(2)Eurolite Xenon Crystals, and now 1 from dealership, and 1 from O'Reilly's.
ALL out of MY OWN pocket. sad.gif
MY DEALERSHIP SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My "guess" is... Hyundai went cheap on alternators/electrical systems during the 2 affected years. The voltage to the bulbs is not kept constant, and the bulbs burn out due to voltage flucutations/over voltage.

The only way to prevent this from happening is to not turn the headlights on until after the idle stabalizes (15 seconds after starting the car), and always make sure to turn the headlights off before shutting the engine off.

I'd like to see you guys try this method and see if your headlights last longer.

If you can, keep track of when/how the bulbs blow/go bad, and what you were doing when the bulb went out. I'd be interested to see if there is a pattern here.

1997 1.8l Rev-A
5-speed
300-watt amp/450 watt sub/panasonic head unit
Nokya 9007 (i only swapped out lo-beams)

For the first 8 months i've owned the car (purchased used on Dec. 5 2001 [it had stock bulbs hi/low]), I went through 5 Nokya's (1st pair lasted the longest for about 2 months then melted the harnesses)... replacing the harnesses almost everytime a burn out happened since it would always cook the bulb to the harness. I thought i got away with some el-cheapo "lite-glo" blue bulbs but they weren't bright enough in a blue tint (55w) and eventually burned out too!

Finally i found some high wattage harnesses from Nokya and have been using these w/ the Nokya bulbs i originally had(85watts i think). No problems. It has been 5 months so far. I love those harnesses (and the bulbs too!).

!!!JAWS 021, you may want to try these harnesses out!!!

sorry to keep reviving this post... but within a week of my passenger side low going out, my driver side low went out! MyTibby, you cursed me! i was fine until this darn thread appeared! ahhhhhhhh!
i should have listened to Random and tried the whole "not turn the headlights on until after the idle stabalizes (15 seconds after starting the car), and always make sure to turn the headlights off before shutting the engine off."
