After Market Hood Vents On Stock Rd2 Hood?
I have done a little research on this website and didn't find much about anyone doing this. So, I figured I would see what you guys thought. The whole idea I'm going for is just a after market hood scoop on my stock hood. Do any of you think this would look good. I just thought of it cause it is a cheap way to spice up a stock hood, and if i decided to do this would I have to make it functional? So it would not make it a ricer or w/e. Only thing with doing that is I have a cold air intake system so would doing that even have any effect? Idk please give opinions...
P.S.- I did find one thing were I can't exactly remember who but they put a wrx scoop in there hood and it looked awsome, so idk just some ideas...

I've been thinking along the same lines this evening, and did the research on it for you already. Caj Darkmoon did the WRX hood scoop, some completed pics here: Caj lip project and the writeup he did for the scoop was here: hood scoop
DON'T get a non-functional eBay rice thing that doesn't even match your paint. What Caj did was amazing, and how it should be done.
It won't really have any effect on you CAI other than slightly lowering your engine bay temp by a bit, but unless you have a tmic, it won't do anything anyhow.

Point of a hood scoop.
Looks!
Ram-Air (Trans-Ams and such)
Air comes through the hood scoop directly into the intake tube literally 'ramming the air' into your intake manifold
Turbo Applications(Soobies)
Subaru WRX turbo cars use this style. They have a top mount intercooler. The air coming through the scoop hits their intercooler.
N/A Applications
About the only thing this is doing it making your car look good and cooling your engine bay. The cold air comes through the scoop cooling as it moves. The faster you go, the more air you get to cool. Same with a vented hood, it vents heat.
Caj actually used a WRX hood scoop, painted it his color, and installed it the right way. Honestly though, stop eating fastfood and save your nickels and dimes for a fiberglass hood or a carbon fiber. Our hoods are extremely heavy. The thing weighs 40lbs!

so far, the only scoop i like is the WRX on our cars.. it just fits the car lol.
what Caj did is perfect. i have seen it in person and it looks like it was there stock. honestly, it does.
even the hardware holding the scoop to the hood looks OEM. the hole in the bottom of the hood is cut perfectly. the scoop it set EXACTLY in the right spot, and its painted stock color..
i would do a hood scoop before i would throw away the money to get a CF/FG hood. you only NEED a CF/FG hood if you are trying to save every pound you can. i would rather invest <100$ in a hood scoop, paint, time to install, than spend 500$+ on a FG/CF hood that MIIIIGGGHT fit good.

Yeah, that Caj guy put a scoop in his hood... oh wait, that's me.
It's actually not a WRX scoop, it's the standard Impreza scoop as I recall. As socks mentioned it's functional, I have a hole in my hood where the scoop is. The way it's set up the air blows right onto my IM, you can actually see the IM and strut bar right through the scoop. That way it cools that down while I'm driving, basically the opposite theory of a vent that's letting hot air out. Kinda fun to see the heat waves come out of it at a stop light though. smile.gif
Total for that project was around $50. I ebayed the scoop, it was black and scuffed up when I got it, which didn't matter anyways. I got spray can of paint mixed at a local auto parts store and sanded it down, primed, painted, and cleared. My only advice on that part is to do a lot of clear, don't get impatient. smile.gif
Here's the real fun part: Thanks to the advice of a guy at the hardware store the scoop is mounted to the hood using storm window brackets, which were perfect for what I need. I'll have to take a picture of it sometime, but it's very solid. I haven't tightened it since I first put it on and it's rock solid attatched still.
Any other questions let me know!

You didn't repaint your entire hood? That's probably a bad thing, now I want to do this more than ever...
Can you take up close pictures of inside and out of the hood so we can easily see the brackets and how it's attached? Is there sort of a seam where the scoop and hood meet? I'd particularly like to see that too.
Also, in your summary of it, you mentioned you had to cut some hood braces or struts or something, what all was that?
DIY please!

Eh id consider a hood scoop throwing money away compared to a real CF or FG hood (cough CF owns)
And as far as fitment, if you do your research and pick a hood that everybody is satisfied with and youll be fine.
regardless of the looks, i would do it just for the weight, 30lbs saved is just great, and even if i didnt race, its so much nicer to lift that than our stock hood; and im no weakling
Plus the real venting is great as well. I know caj did make it functional, but i doubt many others would, they would do the "grand am fake hood scoop rice" in a heart beat because its easy.

Can't do that while I'm at work right now, but I might write one up later. smile.gif
I had to remove one + shaped piece of bracing from under the hood, it made no structural difference. It's interior bracing and honestly didn't matter much. Hood is still just as solid as it used to be.
There is a seam, but it sits on there just like it would on a Subaru, so it doesn't look akward, they have the same seam.
Nope, didn't repaint the entire hood, no need to. I did my cutting very carefully (dremel) and smeared on some primer where I exposed metal with any scratches, other then that just painted the scoop.
I'll try to take some more up close pics soon, mabye try to write up a DIY as well. We'll see.
Everyone's gonna be stealin my idea now, darnit. tongue.gif
Well, thanks for all the replies i would love to just buy a cf or fg hood but as you know not all of us can throw down 500-600 bucks and not have any problems. I like the idea of maybe just ordering one painting it good and sticking it on so there is no real modification and i can always take it off if i don't like it. Call my car a ricer if i don't make it functional but hey, if i screw up i won't have to order a new hood + i get a custom look.
