Would You Pitch In to Get 1.8L Cam Swap Dyno Tested?
Okay so since the 2 liter came out there has been a general concensus that the 1.8L intake cam has been a mild upgrade for the beta 1 engine but AFAIK nobody ever did a before/after dyno comparison.
I'd be willing to paypal a member in good standing maybe $5 or $10 just to satisfy my own personal curiosity. If somebody you trust from here said they'd do it, would you help pay to get their car on a dyno for a back-to-back comparison? Would you be willing to take your 2.0L Beta 1 Elantra or Tiburon to a dyno shop, reset the computer, do a few pulls with the 2.0L cam, change the cam, reset the computer and do a few pulls with the 1.8L cam within hopefully the same hour on the same dynomometer? |

I have the F2Evo variant of the RD Coupe - these as standard have the 1800 inlet cam inside. I've seen a few Evo's dyno'd and the gain is typically 5-7Hp across the range over a comparable (age and miles) SE - which will give you some idea of what you can expect. The real gain with fitting the 1800 cam to a 2L is in the torque, realising improved midrange gains of around 20-30lbft or so from the longer duration.
As far as I know, a back-to-back test of 1800 and 2l cams has never been done though - so I hope this happens, it'll be interesting to get a direct comparison. Anyone fancy doing it with an XD (BETAII) cam as well ;) |
I'm somewhat curious, better be under strictly scientific conditions and with plenty of photos though. How many RD owners are baller enough to front $5 though? :finger2:

well when they were a decade newer maybe . . . now they're not the high-end expensive purchase they used to be ;)

I have 3 extra cams laying around, one of which is a 1.8. Is there a way to tell the difference between the 1.8 and 2.0 by looks alone?
I think this is well worth the science. |
do they all have part numbers on them? They'll look pretty much the same to your eye, but a micrometer could tell the difference

2 of the 3 say 3D, one of them says 2D. I assume that the 2D is the 1.8l.

2.0 cam: J2, 2E, Si, 17-13, C 990820A (MY 2000 Elantra) 1.8 cam: J2, 2D, Si, 21-38, A 971125A (pulled from 1998 Elantra) 1.8 cam: J2, 4A, Is, 27,88, A 970304B (Pulled from 1997 Tiburon) The six digit number is obviously the build date. (YYMMDD) |
