Would You Pitch In to Get 1.8L Cam Swap Dyno Tested?
Okay so since the 2 liter came out there has been a general concensus that the 1.8L intake cam has been a mild upgrade for the beta 1 engine but AFAIK nobody ever did a before/after dyno comparison.
I'd be willing to paypal a member in good standing maybe $5 or $10 just to satisfy my own personal curiosity. If somebody you trust from here said they'd do it, would you help pay to get their car on a dyno for a back-to-back comparison? Would you be willing to take your 2.0L Beta 1 Elantra or Tiburon to a dyno shop, reset the computer, do a few pulls with the 2.0L cam, change the cam, reset the computer and do a few pulls with the 1.8L cam within hopefully the same hour on the same dynomometer? |

Count me in....I would be down! I'm curious to see the difference it make's in the HP & TQ numbers. |
I have the F2Evo variant of the RD Coupe - these as standard have the 1800 inlet cam inside. I've seen a few Evo's dyno'd and the gain is typically 5-7Hp across the range over a comparable (age and miles) SE - which will give you some idea of what you can expect. The real gain with fitting the 1800 cam to a 2L is in the torque, realising improved midrange gains of around 20-30lbft or so from the longer duration.
As far as I know, a back-to-back test of 1800 and 2l cams has never been done though - so I hope this happens, it'll be interesting to get a direct comparison. Anyone fancy doing it with an XD (BETAII) cam as well ;) |
I'm somewhat curious, better be under strictly scientific conditions and with plenty of photos though. How many RD owners are baller enough to front $5 though? :finger2:
|
well when they were a decade newer maybe . . . now they're not the high-end expensive purchase they used to be ;)
|
I have 3 extra cams laying around, one of which is a 1.8. Is there a way to tell the difference between the 1.8 and 2.0 by looks alone?
I think this is well worth the science. |
do they all have part numbers on them? They'll look pretty much the same to your eye, but a micrometer could tell the difference
|
Just tell me where to sign up. Would love to donate to the crooked H cause. Even tho I have a 1.8 with a 1.8 cam...
|
2 of the 3 say 3D, one of them says 2D. I assume that the 2D is the 1.8l.
They have a little corrosion, but they'll clean up fine. http://s24.postimg.org/a90abmqw1/130512_0001.jpg http://s24.postimg.org/tctlrz3q9/130512_0002.jpg http://s24.postimg.org/51jskwzoh/130512_0003.jpg All 3 have different numbers printed on them: http://s24.postimg.org/xkoe0q55t/130512_0006.jpg #= 970121a http://s24.postimg.org/pvw52qu1t/130512_0007.jpg #= 971118a http://s24.postimg.org/xd5chyjkx/130512_0008.jpg #= 001112a 970121a was the 2D. The oily one came out of the head I'm rebuilding. It should be a 2.0 |
I have two 1.8 cams and one 2.0.
2.0 cam: J2, 2E, Si, 17-13, C 990820A (MY 2000 Elantra) 1.8 cam: J2, 2D, Si, 21-38, A 971125A (pulled from 1998 Elantra) 1.8 cam: J2, 4A, Is, 27,88, A 970304B (Pulled from 1997 Tiburon) The six digit number is obviously the build date. (YYMMDD) |
I figured that, but didn't want to volunteer the info without validating.
The 2D in my set has been validated as the 1.8. I would be willing to help out on this big time. I'd offer to dyno mine but the stock motor has seen better days and is still rocking the auto until the new motor is ready to install. Any gains you might see will be sucked away by the torque converter and sloppy internals. :headshake: |

Anyone fancy doing it with an XD (BETAII) cam as well ;) Yep, as stock a UK spec 2.0 made 138bhp, F2 Evo engine made 145bhp, both on an engine dyno in korea, witnessed by a Uk forum trader who used to work for Hyundai in korea. I was given 15-17lbs/ft as mid range figure, either way theres certainly a noticeable difference in the mid range, but little at the top. Hyundai did claim 154bhp from the f2 Evo though, where the other 9bhp came from is unknown, the exhaust was altered slightly, but baffles were fitted further up the line to keep power gains from it down to zero. |
I was a tad rose-tinted about the torque figure then - was too long ago, tbh... LOL
|
we got a dyno here at school that ive run my tiburon on before...
ill ask around, gonna need a torque wrench, but ill post up here if i can get a time set up... its free for me to use, but i dont have a 1.8 intake cam, ill see what i can get one for; worst case ill buy one here on hyundai aftermarket. the car has 80k miles with intake/header and made 126hp 128 ft-lbs avg of 3 runs. |
THAT sounds like a winner!
So then then the second question becomes: would you pitch in to get a 1.8L cam, or if you have one would you donate it to Mr. Muffin? |
I'm in, I've been skeptical about this for years. Would love to finally see some real numbers.
|
I am interested in this as well , Any news?
|
Dyno 2.0 with 1.8 positions I would like to see that
|
positions This ain't that kind of website! |
Give me a brake the damn spell cheak lol you know what I mean!
|
*****piston
|
So is this ever going to happen? Depending on who it is, I'll lend my 1.8 cam and a few bucks to see these results.
Emphasis on loan, I need that back for my build :P |
If someone wants it bad enough to make it happen, it will happen. Otherwise no.
