Hey guys.. Alright, I'm trying to (finally) change my clutch/flywheel. I've got all the bolts out, crossmember off, cv joint off, one jack under the transmission and one under the engine. There is about a 1/4" gap all the way around the transmission, but I can't pull it out!
I can pry it and it feels like its going to come, but it just doesn't. I've been wiggling it and prying and doing everything I can for hours now, I'm totally lost.
Is there something I'm missing?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Haha, i've seen this exact question asked a number of times. I think you have to turn the fork lever so it releases from the TOB. You have to unbolt the lever for it to turn, or something like that, check out these threads:

I read "Mike Highet's clutch diy" over so many times, and he never mentions that.

Wow.

That sucked.

Thanks JonGTR http://www.rdtiburon.com/lofiversion...hp/t12212.html

Anyway, new problem..
I'm trying to get the flywheel off, and I have a 12 point 17mm socket, but I just don't think that's going to cut it. It's like a 16 point bolt? I started with a 12 point 17mm and it already started to strip one of the bolts.
Any advice here?

Thanks

You

Must

Use

An

Impact

Wrench

or your flywheel is staying put. If you go rent an impact gun, you'll be returning it an hour later. It literally takes seconds with the impact and without it, you're (almost) entirely out of luck. I'm sure someone will chime in with a way to keep the engine from turning but I couldn't think of an easy one when I was in there.

You can use a screwdriver/prybar on the teeth to hold on the flywheel.

Are the bolts torx? Like this: http://imagehost.vendio.com/a/17613004/avi..._BMW114180X.jpg
? If so you can probably find some torx sockets in any hardware store

dude!!! be careful not to strip those bolts!!! you need to use an impact to get them off. As you turn the bolt out, you need to press your weight against the gun to make sure that the socket has a good "lock" on the bolts

I'm pretty sure I used a 12 point wrench to take mine off... Could be wrong, but I had it in the drawer, so it can't be that special I don't think.

You'll need the impact though, mine was on a rolling cart, and even then it was a b****.

my impact was my fist against a pry bar lol. They wouldn't let me use the chrome 12pt socket with the impact wrench at the shop because the chrome sockets strip out.

My 2 cents:

I had the same issue with the TOB as you did! I literally pulled and yanked the engine across the shop before I found out about the lil lever thing. (Thanks SOCKS for being on the shoutbox for me then!) ... Still the same TOB in the engine now unfortunately... I have a sneaking suspicion its the cause of the grinding noise I'm hearing now.

I used a normal 12 point 17 mm socket... I did liberally apply penetrating oil. I don't remember how I stopped it from spinning, but that was an issue which I got around.

G'luck with that!
