ive got a 2001 RD with low mileage, and it appears to have two catalytic converters, varying greatly from my other 97' RD tiburon. Which leads me to the questions of why it has two catalytic converters? I bought it in a different state and it looks cheaply welded on as well and not close to factory but acceptable. Would a CEL get thrown if I acually removed the second catalytic converter? Anyone have additional information about this? I could care less, but there is also a gap spacer in the 97' as well for this catalytic converter which is not on there. And is definently stock.
The 2001 Tiburon had two catalytic converters. Many cars do. It's for emissions purposes.
If I remember correctly, the second O2 sensor is BEFORE the second cat. If there's no sensor after the second cat then removing it would not cause a CEL, but I see very minimal gains from removing the 2nd cat unless you're building the engine.
There's no reason to remove the 2nd cat unless it's clogged.

Newer high-end vehicles are now coming equipped with two catalytic converters as part of an even more stringent emissions program. The first converter breaks down the exhaust as normal, while the second acts both as a filter for tiny particles and a pump which releases a chemical mixture that further reduces any harmful gases which may have escaped the first converter.
