Ever since the weather's been warmer here in Michigan(60 degrees), my HLA(lifters) are ticking again. Would a thicker oil cure the noise? Can anyone tell me what Hyundai recommends on heavier oil and what the temp range is? I don't have an owners manual.

I use 5w-40 all year round.

I think you need thinner oil, so that it would easier fill HLAs.

I run 10w30 all year.. but then we only had less than a dozen days below freezing here in South Jersey, the ocean and the deleware bay do a really good job of moderating the tempeture for us.

^^ I use mobil 1 10w-30 all the time, never had an issue and temps here range from 0 in the winter to 90 in the summer.

I use mobil 1 5w30 during the winter and mobil 1 10w30 during the summer

Did you check your oil level? when i was leaking oil out of my turbo oil return line i noticed my lifters were ticking and then i checked the oil, needed more than 1 quart. Fixed the leak, filled up the oil and no more ticking.

I"ve been using several types of 10w30 oils.. ranging from Synthetic, Semi-Synthetic and Conventional. I've used several kinds of oil filters, even Hyundai brand. When it comes to basic maintenance, I am very paranoid about when things have to be changed. My car is burning 1/4 quart every 3,000 miles.

During cold seasons, my HLA doesn't tick very loud... but during warmer seasons, the ticking gets louder. I can't use 5W-40 oil because none of them are approved by the American Petroleum Institute.

^^ but Hyundai aproved 5w-40 oil wink1.gif

I think HLAs should be ticking louder in colder temp, cause it's harder for oil to oil them...

Strange. Do they tick all the time even when engine is hot and you reved it to 3000 RPM?

Hyundai's in USA recommend OIls that are approved by the American Petroleoum institute. 5w40's are not recommended by them.

It only ticks at Idle. But most of the tiem it ticks while cold idle

here is a good article about oil viscosity:

http://www.naftan.by/desktopdefault.aspx?TabID=61

but there are also now API SL oils, that are better than SG.

here is another one:
