What's the best way to break in a new engine?
I was just wondering what is the best way to break in a new engine. I've heard different things so I was wondering which way was better for the engine. I heard to drive it the way you want it to drive from day one with barely any miles on it. Basic just jump in and start burning out and haulin ass. Then I heard to drive about 1200 miles or so then give it hell. As for how I broke mine in for the first 200 miles nothing over 3000 rpm then 201-400 nothing over 4000 rpms 401-600 5000 rpms from 600 on I pretty much opend it up not all the time but on occasion. Then at about 1100 miles I took it to the track. 1/8 mile track, I ran the car stock expect for short ****fer and front strut brace and ran a 10.7 at 65 mph. Its that good? Just wanted to know how you guys broke yalls engines in.

you are well disiplined YOUNG JEDI!
You did a good job breaking that sucker in you are about right on the money!
The main thing about a new engine is the first 100 to 300 miles for the cam shafts or shaft if you only have one!
Varying engine speed and not staying at one speed to long is the main thing!
Some people get in it and just lay in to the engine they figure that if it's gona break than it will !
But I have always used the easy method allowing you new parts to mesh with there bearings and get a good even wear patern in them! smile.gif

Well, I had no choice really on how to break my car in. I bought my Tiburon and promptly had to drive it to my home town, 800 miles north through mountain roads. Ups and downs, passing and being stuck behind trucks. Hopefully that broke the car in properly.

I agree with what you did, and Accent 1, and Iago.
The First oil and filter change should be at 500 Total Miles, then 1500 Total Miles, then 3000 Total miles, then do your normal oil changes after that.
I also always install a mangnetic drain plug and a magnetic oil filter strap on all new cars. JCWhitney has a strong 4 magnet strap for under $15 bucks.

Thanks guys for the input. Some people say I broke it in wrong. But I don't think I did so that is why I was wondering. BTW thanks for the info on the mangnetic strap Random I'll look into getting one.
