Plastic bag over your intake and alternator will be fine. If you're really worried about the plugs, just put tin foil over the area, to prevent them from getting soaked. Here's a good write up on detailing your engine:

good advice in that article: "To loosen the grease accumulated on your engine and the engine compartment, start your engine and allow it to warm for a few minutes. The best temperature for cleaning your engine is warm to the touch, but not hot. If you're able to hold your hand to the engine without saying "Ouch," then the temperature is just about right."

Also, don't use armor all. it'll attract every dust and dirt particle you could imagine like glue and it just looks greasy.

I used a simple degreaser from Auto Zone and a wheel brush. Covered my battery, air filter, and alternator with walmart bags and went to town. I'd be cautious using a pressure washer though - a little degreaser and a brush with a garden hose can work just as well and you don't have to worry about water getting places you really don't want it to.

The degreaser stuff I got even said to just spray it on and rinse off in 5 min, no scrubbing necessary unless it was really caked on there. I scrubbed anyhow...
