i was driving around today and hit a semi-big bump. no biggie, i thought. i go to put it into 4th, and i embarass myself by missing 4th.... so i go to put it into 4th again, and tghis time there's nothing where 4th should be.... my friends freak out... i slow down, stop, drop it to first, then try to second, there's nothing there either. after we stop at my apartments we learn that reverse is gone. now, 2nd and 4th work SOMETIMES so that leads me to believe i lost a linkage or something... right there by the shifter nothing looks out of place and everything works fine there. (i've been driving around for 3 weeks without it so i know what it looks like when it works right)

help please?

 

check to make sure the ajuster bolts on the linkage arnt lose. When you say nothing is there does the stick go into the normal spot for the gear or does it feel like you cant even 'put' the stick in the right spot?

 

^ +1 Have someone else work the shifter while you look in the engine bay. You may have to pull the airbox & MAFS to see well enough in there.

 

Alright I did that. When I had my room mate shift it lookes like they are going nearly there

Maybe you just need to adjust the shifter cables. Maybe you have a bad set of engine mounts. Maybe the combination of the two plus one good jolt was enough to knock your shifter setup out of alignment. Get under the car and check the mounts. You can probably find on hyundaitechinfo.com, how to adjust the cables.

Now, by the way, "while you're in there" is the time to install skateboard wheel bearings on the transaxle end of the shift cables.

 

yeah i was already looking at doing the skateboard bearing replacements.

 

figured it out. when i went to to the bushing to bearing swap, i noticed only one cable had the large c shaped retainer on it.... i got my friend to shift it really quick while i watched, and the cable moves side to side around in the groove since that retainer isn't there. i went and found a piece of metal to temp. check if that fixed it, and yeah, it was that. i'm going to go through with the bearing mod right now, as well as the mod to the clutch i found on here.

thanks guys, if i hadn't tried to do the bearing mod i might not have noticed at all.
