The only other thing that I can possibly think of is a transmission cooler (my computer crashed a week ago so I don't have the site Google should get you there) I looked in to it for mine but it looked to complicated for me, if I had a problem I would try putting it in though.

The time in the book is 15k in between services on the auto tranny... Manual transmissions are every 30k. I don't drive an automatic (thank god), but if I did be sure to keep a really close eye on it if you do drive it hard.

OK...I don't want to argue your intervals without having access to my own manual...BUT why does the link below from HyundaiUSA say to INSPECT (check levels/consistency) your fluid every 15k miles, but not to REPLACE it until 105k miles.

http://www.hyundaiusa.com/Owners/Car_Care/...Schedule_7k.asp

I understand this is for the GK's, but aren't the I4 engines/transmissions basically identical?

Its better to be safe than sorry in my opinion it is worth it to change it every 15k or 20k miles if I don't have to buy another transmission. Keep the fluids good and your car will be to laugh.gif

The "autotragics" are crap. No way around it.

23 out of 59 total Technical Service Bulletins for the 01 Tiburon are dealing with the automatic transmission in one form or another.

03-40-022 DEC 03 A/T - Fail Safe Mode/Erratic/Hard Shifting/DTC's Set

01-40-006 MAR 01 A/T - DTC's P0717, P0722, P1624 Diagnostic Procedures
01-40-003 FEB 01 A/T - Hydraulic Pressure Test
01-40-004 FEB 01 A/T - Remanufactured A/T Program
00-40-012 SEP 00 A/T - Diagnostic Trouble Codes & Scanned Data
00-40-010 AUG 00 A/T - MIL ON DTCs P0712/P0713 Set
00-40-009 AUG 00 A/T - Shift Solenoid Incorrect Operation/MIL ON

Unfortunately, because none of these are considered to be "life threatening", they aren't classified as recalls, and therefore...leave us with the "autotragic" crap that we have.

I personally think Hyundai is keeping the details of exactly what breaks secret so that we don't have enough information to file a class action lawsuit. If you will recall, Canada uncovered the "oops" in the overstated horsepower figures (140 claimes vs. ~127 real) that resulted in the "genorous" warranty extensions. Maybe Hyundai thinks it has taken enough heat over the Tibs and they are keeping quiet about anything else that could trigger more bad publicity.

With this being said...I still love my Tiburon! (Although I hope to rekindle our relationship once I get the tranny swap out of the way)

NOTE TO ANYONE BUYING A RD TIBURON...GET THE MANUAL!!!

Yep. I think the manual transmission is pretty strong if you take care of it. You can pound on it, and it will take it as long as you are actually shifting right.

Bad wording on my part. Your right on it being check every 15k miles, not replace. Still, you want to make sure you keep an eye on it and make sure its not bad. But if it is bad after 15k miles, you probably have a bad transmission anyway.

The majority of it is that Hyundai just makes crappy auto transmissions. My mother's Subaru Forester has 120k miles on the transmission, with me driving it hard for about 5k miles before I had my car. My mom drives pretty fast for a mom too. There isn't a single slip in the transmission when you pound it.

Hyundai, on the other hand, is horrible. One person who rents one of the houses my dad owns had a Santa Fe. Transmission blew at 8k miles out of the factory.

Auto to manual is still going to cost 2000-3000 dollars depending on if you do it yourself. New ECU, harness, etc. plus new mounting points and such.

You can build an automatic to run just as well as a manual. Most 11 second and lower cars run automatic transmission. Just pop in a tranny cooler, get the torque convertor beefed, and bullet proof the sucker and its good to go. Shouldn't cost much more than a swap to manual either, and should be good to around 600hp if done right.

Are you forgetting the JUNKYARDS?

I am jumping the gun a bit early, since I have not yet completed my manual swap, but I can tell you that you should be able to complete the swap under 1k if you are willing to do the work yourself.

I have purchased a tranny, all pedals, all lines, all linkage, all switches, all wiring, everything necessary to do the swap for $550 shipped. This is with a 90 day warranty. (You can keep your auto ECU and have no CEL if you make a couple of minor wiring adjustments.)

There are several people on this forum and hp.com that have completed the swap in RDs and RD2s under the 1k figure.

Do some research before you decide on building the auto. I have had very poor luck with them, and the more I read, the more I find that I am not alone. The previous posts in this thread will give you some idea of how shitty they are, and there are MANY more people out there.

The automatic is also heavier, which starts you out at a disadvantage.

IMHO, any automatic short of Level 10 work wouldn't consistently hold 200hp at the flywheel, and by the time you got that done, you could have paid someone to do your swap for you. But that is my opinion.

BTW: NEW (reman, they don't sell ANY "new") tranny prices at Hyundai

Auto: 1508
Manual: 19xx

Here's a link to Level 10 if you are serious about building your autotragic. This link is directly to the Hyundai Price Sheet for Stage II and Stage III work. Looks like just short of $2250 to "DIY Bulletproof" your auto with Stage II and about $2400 for the same kit at Stage III. This does NOT include labor!

Good Luck on whatever you decide.
