timing advance

my friend told me that if I advance the timing by 5 degrees and keep using high octane gas that it will give me more horsepower. is this true or all bs?

faithofadragon 02-17-2010 08:55 AM

the amount of hp youd get would be WORTHLESS

plus how are you gonna advance timing...not like we have a distributor lol

Visionz 02-17-2010 08:57 AM

^ What faith said. You're friend is severly misinformed. Thats basically a trick that alot of domestic and muscle guys will do to increase power from their bigger V8's, but for our engines...dont even bother trying.

Red Tib 02-17-2010 08:58 AM

ok thanks. i thought so but just wanted to ask the pros here and make sure.

that was an easy 20hp on the old foxbody 5.0 mustangs. but to do it on our cars you would have to adjust the cam gear(s) 1 tooth on the belt. then your computer would go crazy trying to correct the advanced timing and make your car run worse. Of course, this is assuming you dont destroy the valves and pistons.

faithofadragon 02-17-2010 11:46 AM

or you can use a f/ic and use that to advance timing...but for the cost and the tuning of the fic your better off just running a 50 shot of nitrous

Well I must be the exception to the rule here because I picked up quite a bit. While tuning my car on the dyno a majority of the power increase came from bumping up the timing.

faithofadragon 02-17-2010 02:09 PM

how much hp?

5?

at what cost?

a fuel computer, a dyno, and tuning

what other mods?

radu_rd2 02-17-2010 03:25 PM

FIC can't advance timing, just retard.

It was over 10 hp gained before I even touched the fuel maps and I was already about +4 degrees over stock before even going there. The motor is an NA beta 1 with bolt ons so I’m sure some would say it wouldn’t be that much of an improvement if it was completely stock. However I street tuned a stock alpha with only a cold air intake and exhaust and was able to cut nearly ¾ of a second off of my quarter mile time, again seeing a majority of the improvement due to timing adjustments.
