For those with a gutted cat
I was wondering how you guys went about gutting your vertical cats. The one on the exhaust manifold. I need to gut mine because its clogged right now causing the car not to start. So I need a quick fix so I can get my cat-back done. Also just leaving the CEL on is a bad idea. Check out summit racing www.summitracing.com they have O2 simulators to use for the #2 O2 sensor the one behind the cat. The part number is CEI-104037 O2 Simulator, 2/Box $50.99. It looks to be on back order right now though. You can also get it directly from Casper Electronics for a little cheaper but it takes 10-14 days to get it. http://casperselectronics.com/cgi-local/st...product=IMPORTS It allows you to drive on a bad cat without the CEL. You can check out the link I gave for Capser if you would like to know more about it. If your car has a CEL due to a bad O2 sensor it will jack up the richness of the car. WHich will cause other problems. And with the CEL already on it will mask any other CEL's. So if something else goes wrong with the car then the ECU will not save the error code. I just got done having this problem with driving on a bad TPS sensor for 6 months. The car ran a little rich but over 6 months it clogged my cat. The I never got the CEL code telling me that the CAT was bad because I already had a CEL on due to the TPS. Just a helpful hint. But I really need to know how you guys gutted your cats. Thanks

Just an F.Y.I. Your ECU is capable of storing over 20 individual CEL codes at one time.
Trust me..I've had to clear over 20 at one time.
The TPS bad probably CAUSED the cat to go bad, but the CEL for BOTH should have been in the ECU.
Why not just replace the front cat with another one?

Well, all I know is that I only had to clear a bad TPS code not an O2 sensor/cat related code. My cat is totally clogged. Yeah I know the bad TP caused the clogged CAT. The ECU defaults a little rich and after driving 6 months like that. smile.gif I never had an O2 sensor related code. The dealership told me it probably masked and did not store the CEL for the O2 sensor. Anyway, just htought I'd give someone the advise of the O2 simulator. There is nothing wrong with running without a cat as long as you have a way to compensate for the A/F ratio. (of course you won't be exactly legal either. But hey, how many of us are in Cali running with non CARB approved crap. smile.gif There's no Smog check where I am at in Texas so I really don't have to worry about it yet. Thats what the O2 simulator is supposed to do. And as far as replacing the front cat well its a part of the exhaust manifold you would have to replace that thing as well. And a stock replacement for that thing is $697. Um no. I'll gut it for now and do the cat-back. When I finally get my header, then I will add a high flow cat.
