Sure, why not. {Dual exhaust}
I know I've brougth this up before, and most of the more knowledgable individuals were rather irritated that I'd even consider this. I don't know what the most beneficial diameters would be. I have to imagine that in some form this setup will NOT make you loss power, even though you may not gain any...

2" exhaust gives you better power early in the RPM range...
2.5" gives you more power in the higher RPM band
If you have a stickshift... get a 2.5
If you have an auto get a 2.0
Anything bigger than 2.5 is overkill for an NA car...

If we are talking about the Alpha motor here. I would go with 2 pipes of no larger than 1.5" In reality, you'd have to do some testing to find out if 1", 1.25" or 1.5" works best. Maybe even 1.75...but I doubt it.
IMHO, your crazy for even considering it. The weight of having 2 pipes, 4 cats, and 2 mufflers far out weights any performance benefit you could possibly gain from it.
If you are even semi-serious about this, go with a 1.75" or 2" pipe back to the rear axle, then split the pipe out there to 2 seperate pipes for dual exhaust. You'll still have the weight of 2 mufflers, but at least you will have more or less the same weight as the stock system going all the way back.
There is no, and I mean NO reason whatsoever to have 2 seperate exhaust systems on an inline 4 cylinder motor.
If you want the "cool" factor of dual exhaust...fine, do it after the rear axle.

Im with Random on this. It will look cool though, if you can get everything lined up nice and neat. the worst thing is to see dual exhausts that do not line up. No benefit in power because of weight. N/A cars usually see 1 to 4 hps gained in exhaust and depending on mufflers used you could be adding 20 to 30 more pounds. In England a while back they used motorcycle canisters but I believe this to be REALLY LOUD but sounds cool. Good luck.
