Default Stock Air Box

Hi,

Have any of you that have removed the Stock Air Box and placed a cone filter on the stock hose of a Kia Sephia or Spectra ever gone back to the stock box?

I ask this because, I get the feeling sometimes that my car runs better with the Air Box. I made a custom intake one day using 2.5 inch ALUMINUM MANDREL BENT TUBE, but that was even worse.

I think the problem with the COne on the stock hose, or on my Custom tube, is that the intake is really sucking in hot air.

Has any one with a Hyundai ever experienced that too?

I haven't seen this on a Hyundai but one of my friends did this with his Impreza. I think what you may be experiencing is a loss of torque. What we think happened has do do with air flow and air reserve. The stock box provides a reservoir of air for the engine to use when you hit the throttle. The more important detail is that the airflow was very turbulant with the filter too near the intake. That made for incinsistant flow. The computer couldn't make it run smoothly.

run the intake from your fender to the TB, that way you'll have cold air. it takes awhile for your ECU to get used to it.

Thanks for your replies. I have a custom header on my car and it doesn't have a heat shield. And I doubt there's a place here in Costa Rica where they would Ceramic Coat them. I also don't trust putting Heat wrap as I am afraid it will ruin them quickly.

Could it be that those headers are causing higher air temps, and that's why the intake isn't effective?

Either way, the Custom header + Stock intake is a whole lot better then the stock header+ cone filter.

Make sure you disconnect your battery for a while so your ECU will reset. I removed the stock air box and put a tube and cone filter on. I noticed an increase in power right away. Then I put the stock box on to take it to the dealer and the power was gone. frown

You know, it's kind of funny, but I have had the oposite effect. I actually felt more power as soon as I returned the AirBox to it's place.(and I didn't reset the ECU)(

This has happened twice. 3 weeks ago I had to take the car in for inspection, so I put the airbox back without resetting the ECU. I had it like that for a week and a half and I thought the car felt stronger. Then one day I removed it(again, without resetting the ECU), then the next day I placed the aluminum tube(this time I did reset the ECU, left in disconnected overnight). I drove it like that for one day, and it lost alot of power.

So then I went back to the stock tube and cone filter(I reset the ECU) and the car was better. But I still felt it could be better. So I installed the AirBox, and it does pull more(without resetting the ECU). Go figure.

I hate to say it, but unless you dyno the car with the airbox in place, and then dyno it agin with your CAI setup, you won't really know.

Placebo gains/losses are impossible to nail down.
