O.k Tiburon Guru's!
I have a few issues at the moment and would like some help :?

1997 Tiburon 1.8L
Base
184,800 km

87 oct gas (Canada)
Automatic
(bought it last July)

I am noticing that my acceleration is not what it was 4 months ago.
it is very slow off the start, and if i slam the pedal to the floor, there is a second or 2 of lagg time before she starts to bolt.

My gas mileage has gone downhill!! (Tried all gas types ,and re-set the ECU each time)
when i got my car, i got at least 450km - 550km out of the tank
now i swear i only get 280 - 300km a tank!!
plus i am smelling fuel at times when i exit the car (only when car is running)

- There are no leaks under the car
- smoke comming from the exhaust looks normal

I was looking under the car and noticed some rust around the piping at a weld point - not sure if the exhaust is leaking, or what.

I was wondering if the fuel filter has something to do with this?
or if its an exhaust leak?
actually i really dont know enough at this point to know what the problem would be. :?

I would like to hear what you good people think, before i go and get an *Oil/filter change *
*I noticed a mucky brown/orangish colour on the bottom of the oil cap,
and the engine coolant is a greenish /brownish colour as well.

Again, ...I'd love to hear what your thoughts on this are.

*Edit* I have new NGK V plugs(2 months old) and i am picking up new wires tommorrow morning.

maybe your fuel filter needs to be changed and if you had an exhaust leak you would be able to hear it but if you still have the same fuel filter from the factory then i would change it

even with NO exhaust system, you should not be smelling gas. I think that is where you have to start your search. You might have a leak somewhere.. could be anywhere from the tank to the injectors.. and back again with the fuel return.

it could just be a ignition problem. one bad cylinder would cause take off to be slow and gas mileage to drop. so check wires, plugs, and everything else ignition related.

You guys are awesome with your info!

o.k,...

I picked up my NEW Ignition wires "Performa", Checked the plugs - looks great!

I ripped out my old crap wires, and DAMN!, ...the shortest wire was TOAST!!
it had white crap all where it hooks on the the spark plug, and when i rubbed it, .. it turned black, and looks like charcoal!
(I'll get my camera and post a pick of it, kinda funny)

anyway, I cleaned the areas, then slapped on the NEW wires,(which are the colour red) put the lid back on, and off i was to test drive the new wires.

... HOLY FREAKING HELL!!

I took off like cockroaches when they see light!, I cannot belive the difference a couple wires can make.
I felt like i was driving a NEW CAR!! I'm SOooo happy right now.
My weak as$ acceleration is gone, and now i cant even tell sometimes that the engine is running when im at a stop light!!

to all you guys that have shaking steering wheels, mirrors, ... get new wires!!!! STAT!

I know i sound like a newbie, but i'm really truly happy right now.
If i ever loved my car before, i love her even more now.

I dont smell any fuel at all FOR ONCE!, haha it some how fixed that problem, ... beats me?
everything is great now, I really apprecitate you guys helping me out.
I knew hardly anything at all about cars before 6 months ago, and you people have helped out so much.

Thank-you

you are not smelling fuel anymore because it is burning in the engine instead of vaporizing somewhere in the exhaust.

toasted does not begin to describe that... glad it was an easy fix.. I know I need new wires and plugs now.. I had to play with the wires to get my car running after having the head all apart.
