Default Rattle in my muffler

I think there's a pebble in my muffler and I'm wondering how to get it out.

It defintiely seems to be on the bottom side, but I'm not sure if I can shake it out or not.

Does anyone know what the insides of these mufflers look like? It's not a complete free-flow muffler, since I can't see through it.

any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Are you talking about the 100% stock muffler or an aftermarket unit? Good luck shaking it out though. I doubt it is a pebble unless someone THREW it in there. It is more than likely a bit of your muffler falling apart inside...

The aftermarket one. Funny thing is, it only rattles when cold. After about two minutes of driving, I can't recreate the rattle (it's usually at around 3000 rpm in first or second under load).

My dad said it might be the rubber hangers. they are cold at start and the unit may vibrate against something. After everything's good and hot, they expand just a bit, which makes everything better.

I'm changing the oil Saturday morning, so I'll probably jack up the rear and take the muffler off and check for a rattle. If not, I'll check for contact against the frame or suspension.

Yup, my fully rebuilt exhaust does the same thing when it's cold and idling. It's not so much a rattle as a definate quick "light thumping" sound wink.gif The very last hangar right there at the muffler doesn't sit perfectly straight when cold (dunno what causes that) so it kinda bumps around until it's warm.

But I've also had a glasspack that rattled when it was blown, but it was only blown because it was a crap part to begin with. Never go to Midas for exhaust work

I'm thinking of getting a small roll of thermotec to wrap my CAI with.

Do you all see any problems using the excess to wrap a linkage or support near the muffler (used more as padding than insulation)?

Just wondering. I'll also look for exhuast hangers that are a wee bit longer than the ones that came stock.

Well, I fixed the "rattle". It actually wasn't a rattle at all. The piping was rubbing a rear suspension member and the tip was hitting the bumper.

I loosened the clamp brackets and twisted things around down there and fixed it, for the most part. The rattle is gone, it doesn't rub anymore, but the tip isn't centered in the little notch anymore. I guess I'll try again next weekend and see if I can get it straight.

Whew, though! smile.gif I'm glad I didn't have to ship the whole thing back for a warranty replacement; turned out the problem was my dumb-ass installation. sad.gif

If you installed it so that it lined up right, and it rattled, sounds like their poor as manufacturing, not your install. If you have to move the tip to offcenter to eliminate the noise...that's hardly your fault.

Well, I was only concerned with eliminating the rubbing on Saturday (and I was rushed, since I had a birthday party to get to). I didn't even notice the tip was off-center until yesterday evening. I'll give it one more try next weekend before I chalk it up to bad manufacturing. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Curtas,
Were you the one who installed a pacesetter? It might be a lemon, you might want to check with the manufacturer. wink.gif

No, the rattle was most definitely the rubbing of the suspension. I just need to get under there and have someone stand back and tell me how it looks.

When I was under the car, all I could see/adjust was the "over pipe" and the muffler with respect to the body. I couldn't really see the tip and bumper. I'll give it one more attempt and then contact Pacesetter. I really like the sound (deep but not overly loud) so I hope this does indeed fit.

Of course, I only got the pacesetter because it was cheap and I plan on getting a custom 2.5 or 2.75 next year when I get the turbo fitted.

anyway, I'll let you know how it goes,
