Default Question about the A'PEXi N1 muffler.

Hey guys,

I am doing a custom exhaust job on my 2003 GTV6 and I'm going with the N1 muff.

There are two kinds of N1 mufflers. One for Turbo cars and one for the NA cars.

It seems that the Turbo muffler has a 115mm tip/3" inlet and the NA muffler has a 90mm tip/2.5" inlet.

My question is being that the turbo muffler says "FOR TURBO CARS ONLY" would I be able to use it for my setup being that I would want the bigger tip and inlet? It just sounds funny to me that they would lable a muffler "TURBO ONLY" I mean what is the differance between the two? Am I missing something. I hope somebody can help.

Thanks guys,
Börg

the turbo muffler has a 3" pipe... the N/A one, I believe has piping from 2.25"-2.5" and no bigger, I have the turbo muffler, if you purchase that one you will loose power... unless you're pushing 215+ at the wheels???

A turbo setup need the extra space to "turbo" the exhaust out easier. Where as a N/A car needs more back pressure for added gains. Adding more than 2.5" piping on a N/A car will result in losses of hp. If you want a 3"+ exhaust tip that's fine. Its recommended that a 2.25 pipe is used for most rides with out any type of boost.
Hope this helps.

Well, I have the apex-i N1 Turbo with 2.5" and I did notice a nice increase in power once installed. If you go the route I did...make sure you get a glasspack. Unless you like it REALLY loud.

If you were to go with 2.5" tubing all the way back, I seriously doubt going to a 3" inlet muffler would seriously alter your backpressure much. Most of the backpressure is in the piping, cat and headers, not the the muffler (when you are talking about straight through designs like the N1). I doub't if you get much more backpressure with the 2.5" than with the 3".

However, if you are REALLY worried about tip size envy...why not just have your local machine shop weld on a 115mm tip on the end?

i also have a turbo N1 on order, and will be having 2 1/4" pipes welded in from the 2nd cat on back, removing the resonator. I'll have no problems with losing backpressure, from what i'm told by people i trust.

Guess we'll see.

Thanks guys for all your help.

I have one more question about the N1 mufflers.

Is there a sound difference between the Turbo and the NA muffler?

Thanks once again,
Börg

I dunno about the sound difference.. I have the NA APEXi Muffler and it sound pretty darn good. Nice and deep at low RPMs and stays deep until about 4500rpms then my intake takes over and I can't hear the muffler anymore. smile.gif

Spatch!

As I understand it, yes, there will be a sound difference. The turbo has somewhat of a quieting effect on the exhaust. I would expect the turbo muffler to be quite a bit louder than the N/A one. If you think i'm crazy, go read some stuff at miata.net or flyinmiata.com or one of those sites.. that's where i'm getting this from.

Let me rephrase that question...
If I were to use the same 2.5" pipe on both the Turbo N1 and the NA N1 would there be a sound difference between the two? Sounds like a dumb question, but my main concern with my exhaust setup would be the sound. I am looking for a deep/loud tone.

Also while its on my mind. What if I were to convert the stock dual exahust setup of the 03' just to a single pipe, would the sound differ much from the dual with either of the N1's? Keep in mind I'm looking to go LOUD tongue.gif

Thanks guys in advance,
Börg
