A sharp retort is the only thing required on anyone who tells you to do anything with muffler belts... fing02.gif

If you overtighten the belt, you will have squeaking after a few miles. It should be tight enough to where it doesn't deflect while it runs, but not so tight that you can't push the long side of the belt in with your finger.

Just like tdonnell said, get a good quality belt. Specify that you want a Gates belt. DO NOT GET A DAYCO POLY-COG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If the belt needed to be cogged, the pulleys would be cogged. It just makes the belt slip more. And belt dressing sucks. It's like sore throat spray. It temporarily relieves the squealing, but in a little while it's going to come back even worse.

Also check the alignment of your pulleys with a straight edge.

You wouldn't happen to still have residual coolant on your pulleys would you? That stuff is slick, and if there's a drop of it on any pulley the belts will hate you. Get yourself a couple cans of brake cleaner and clean all the pulleys and belts.

isn't brake cleaner a bit abrasive to belts? Would it not dry the belts out prematurely?
