Please Help Do I Need A New Engine?

Hey dude,
try putting 10w30 Synthetic and a can of "engine restore". Dude, after using engine restore 3 times, I burned from 1 quart to 1/8 quart of oil. My engine was smoother and my gas mileage improved. 20w50 seems way to thick for this engine.

I suggest the newer engine, $400 for one is not bad at all, is that a Beta 2? im guessing it is, if its about 16,000 miles.
If you can do the engine swap i highly recommend it. Its like getting a whole new car, so to speak.

actually the new engine is a beta1-...
i used to use that engine restore w/ every oil change since i got the car (135,000) along w/ 10w-30 w/ decent results-... then a couple of oil changes later, i only got about a quart and a 1/2 back. so i looked in my owner's manual and looked up the temp range for where i live-... it said i could use 10w-50 (i think)/ 20w-50. i went with the 20w-50, and tried lucas (heard much better things rather than restore). i got better results w/ the 20w-50/lucas than i did w/ the 10w-30/restore.
engine restore can be purchased at any auto parts store for $5ish-... or you can get lucas fing02.gif for $9ish for better results and twice the fluid!
yeah i can swap out the engines, the only part that kinda concerns me is getting the TOB out of the pressure plate (i heard that is a pain). but other than that-... it shouldn't be too much harder than changing the clutch/flywheel.

If you want to clean out your engine, try Auto-RX. The stuff works well on oil-burning high-mileage engines. Make sure to follow the instructions to the letter, though. I used it in my 99 Elantra with good results.

the thing that concerns me the most is the low compression and 147,000 miles-... i have the feeling that these piston rings are crap. the excessively warm engine bay might have to do with my header wrap coming loose.
never tried auto-rx but, i have used some k&w engine cleaner (i think that's the name of it, friend had great results w/ that) and i have used seafoam aswell.
mad-john- could you get back to me on my 1st pm please-... also i don't really have the time to actually rebuild the engine. a new engine gives me a little extra assurance rather than an old engine that was slapped together in a weekend. but i do thank you for your offer!
