Obx Cam Sprocket Problems...
Hey guys!
I was wondering if anyone out there would be able to help me with this little problem I have.
I bought an obx cam gear on ebay a while ago and when I installed it and tried hand cranking it at zero degrees everything was fine but when I put a few degrees on it you could sense when hand cranking it that the valves were touching...I advanced it maybe 3 degrees and when i put it back to zero it did the same thing...so right now the gear is still in its box taking space in my room...does anybody know what I could do to fix this or is it simply that the guy on ebay sent me the wrong one? Any help would be gladly apreciated since I searched everywhere and found no answer 02.gif
Btw I have a 98 tiburon FX if that helps tongue.gif

did you crank the cam gear without it being connected to the crankshaft? guessing no if you have your car back together now & not exploding.
i would put it back on, make sure that the allen bolts for adjustment are super tight, and then make small adjustments. you might have skipped a tooth or two if 3 degrees is causing contact. you should have close to 10 degrees without problems.

does someone have a diy for this? when I tried installing it I was with my friend whose a mecanic (not really in mods like this) what we did was install and tightened the gear with the belt, loosened the bolts on the gear and cranked with the bar to 3 degrees then tightened back the bolts on the gear and checked by cranking it to see if the valves touched, wich it did...then we put the gear back to zero and same thing, so he said I had the wrong one and we put the stock back one on...Is this the way to do it or did we do something wrong? usually I dont have problems getting mods installed on my car but around here almost no one did this mod lol so no one can help me :S
also tnx for the quick reply tibby01 ^^

the easy way to install the adjustable cam sprocket is to just loosen the tensioner, unbolt the stocker, put on the new one, and tighten the tensioner.
a good idea is to put the new cam gear right up to the stock one and with whiteout draw a line straight on the timing belt and to the new gear. it will help you determine the exact placement of the cam gear on the belt by lining them up.
just replace the stock one with the aftermarket one making sure that the cams don't rotate pulling the belt off, while the belt is off, or when you are putting the belt back on to the new gear.

The only way to install a cam gear is to pull the the timing belt off and line up the timing marks the proper way so you know that everything is good, trying to slip the gear on and taking shortcuts could lead to disaster, just take it apart and do it the right way. Ive seen to many people screw stuff up taking the easy half ass route.
thats why i said easy way. wink1.gif
i did that the first time but learned tricks to make sure everything lines up correctly. you can whiteout a spot on the valve cover so that you know the gear is correctly aligned with the cam and that you didnt skip a tooth when you swapped.
but if you are at all unsure, pop off the pass. splash guard and lineup the cam and crank at tdc.

^^ Actually when the cam gear is at TDC the crank has to be at 9 O'clock i thought? If they are both facing TDC your in some shit lol
Anways when I did this I had some trouble the 1st time and learned quickly how to do it the 2nd time.
To start I loosened the bolt on the gear (17mm), then I cranked it up to TDC (I assume you know what that is and how to check/do it). Next I loosened the tensioner pulley (its a 14mm I believe). I pulled the OEM gear off and put the new one on. Slide it on so that its set at 0 degress facing TDC. While the belt is still loose place it on the gear. Make sure all allen bolts are Tight or the settings will adjust themselves. Retighten the tensioner making sure the belt isnt too loose. Then(this step is optional but I recommend it) remove the passenger splash gaurd, jack the car up and turn the wheels facing away from the car on the passenger side. Take the bolt out of the crank pulley and check the notch in there. If its facing 9oclock and your gear is at TDC then your timing is okay smile.gif! Put all the parts you took off back on from the previous steps. Now that everything is back together turn the engine by hand (on the exhaust cam there is a wrench spot, you can muscle the crank by hand, or even turn the cam sprocket) and make sure all seems right. If so then run your car and drive it for a day with out adjusting any degrees. IF by this point everything is okay go ahead and adjust your timing degrees. fing02.gif
Sorry thats not in DIY form and is just a long paragraph but I hope it helps!
And I realize there are alot of extra steps but that is probably the safest and cautious ways to do this!

just put the OBX gear over the stock gear and you'll see that the timing marks are WAY off...
i think you need to skip a teeth and adance 4° to get the timing back to stock...
