Need Some Help With Find Out Whats Wronge?
Ok here is my problem, when I try to go in drive I can rev the hell out of it but nothin but as if it where idling, but I have perfect power in rev. It is a 97 2.0 automatic, I am just starting to think the tran is gone, anyone know where one is for pretty cheap?
Instead of drive, if you manually shift the lever into "1" will the car move forward? What about "2"
Once the car is moving, if you move it back into "D" will it then shift normally, or is it only starting out?
It could be something as simple as a shift linkage problem, but since 'R" works, I doubt it.
As always, first check your tranny fluid level and color. If it's not RED, change it, along with the filter if you've never done the filter before/recently. Yeah, sometimes you get lucky and a fix is that easy. If your fluid is low/brown, you may have done damage to the transmission, but the only way to tell what/how bad is to put in the proper fluid level/new fluid and see how it performs.
If the fluid is at the proper level, and proper color, consider taking your car to a local transmission shop to have them examine it. Most will give you an estimate for a resonable cost.
Worse case senario, used transmissions are in the $300-$600 range. It's up to you if you feel capable of tacking the install/un-install.

1. when/how did it start happening? usually that will give you a good idea of what went wrong.
2. have you been nuetral dropping it?
3. sounds like a tranny, call shops and check ebay! 02.gif
edit: oh, btw, you might wanna check on a rebuild of the tranny but i did with my manual and they wanted like a grand to rebuild it and i got a new one for like 475 shipped on ebay.

Here is how it happened I was driving bout 65 on the highway stopped at a red light, then I went to go and it is reving up to like 2,000 rpms before it moved, and it is still nothin to brag about, but after I get upto about 45 I'm fine. I let it sit over night and tryed to move it, fine in reverse but I put it in drive and nothin at all now, but there was a spot of tran fluid under my car. My tran fluid is full and I can't tell where it leaked from. No neutral dropping, like my car to much for that. I just had the tran filter changed, tran flush about 9,000 ago. And you gotta love the timing as today is my last day of work, then my contract is out. I can't find anything around here. The only one I found in my area have one but 500, and it has some damage to it. And the only one on ebay starting bid is 500. Anyone know where a auto tranny is? BTW would I have to switch axels to change from a auto to a man?

hey i just noticed, south wv? where you at(notice my location). how close are you to columbus? I go up there all the time to junkyards. with ricart close by(supposed to be the largest hyundai dealer in the us) there are alot of hyundai's in the junkyars around there one in particular has like 5 tibs... hehe, my little secret. and all of them are auto's so that might be a possibility. pm me and i'll get you their address and #. can't even remember the name right now. actually need to call them anyways.
i had the same problem with mine before getting it replaced....selenoids were fried and also the torque converter was shot. Not cheap at all unless you know how to DIY it. Not too hard. You will need a car lift, an engine lift and tools. Also, basic transmission experience. took me a week to do mine working on it off and on.
yea.. your transmission is dead. I remember when those exact same symptoms happened with my friend's 73 Impala. I had to drive it home backwards one night from where it died at the store he was shopping at when it gave up the ghost.

sent you that pm, if you have a friend, uncle 2nd cousin, grandma, whoever with a lift, beg them to use it, then look for a mechanic friend to help. i did my tranny at my uncle's garage with one of his mechanics and ended up paying for the tranny and his time but once he showed me what needed to be done i did most of the work. so in all i didn't have more than 700 in a new tranny and clutch installed including parts.
