On friday my car broke down on the interstate. I had it towed to a NAPA service center where they told me my timing belt snapped. I just found out that the valves on my second and third cylinder are bent. I had the mechanic make a rough estimate to rebuild the head and replace the timing belt. It was just under $1000. I know i can find heads for way cheaper and throw it on myself and save a buch of money. I could also find an engine for around $400 and install that. I cant justify spending $1000 on a head rebuild on a car with 98000 miles. I just dont know what to to and input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

1999 tib im guessing. I would say do either a new motor or a new head. If you do the new head just get a whole new timing belt kit installed. still going to be a few hundred if you cant do it yourself though

Get a new head off a junk yard motor or just find someone with a parts car and see if they will part the head off the motor. Still got some life in that motor. Just get a head. Thats what I'd do.

yea i imagine that quote was so high due to the labor involved. around here they charge like 60 an hour for any automotive shop.
u have lotsa options to go with though, id just look into everything and figure what will work best for u based on money, timeframe etc.

throw a junk motor in there man. getting it rebuilt would give you more problems.

very wierd situation. why do you think the heads cracked? hyundai engines usually go to 150,000 without engine problems.

I don't see any mention of the head being cracked, and it shouldn't be cracked in this situation, but the head will still have to be rebuilt...

Also make sure the pistons don't have any severe damage. When the timing belt breaks at highway speeds, there's usually catastophic damage from the valves crashing into the pistons. We do these all the time at work for customers who didn't listen when we told them they needed to change their timing belt. A timing belt should NEVER have more than 60k miles put on it before it's changed, and this is why.

Yeah its a daily driver and my only transportation. Being in college i dont have a bunch of money either. Just found out that the belt didnt break but the ribs in the belt wore away in one spot causing it to not catch the pully. The mechanic said hes never seen it happen before. I asked him about gettin a different head and he said that he'd have to machine it and it would be a bad idea. I want a different engine but have no idea how much it would cost to have it installed.
