Default MAF vs. MAP

Okay, are there any adv. dis-adv. between BETA's with MAF or MAP? I have a U.S. Spec BETA and i'm also a big fan of turbo charginng & hearing that BOV! However, because of my MAF setup, i understand the fact that if i turbo charge, i can't use a BOV, otherwise i confuse the ECU. So a Bypass valve is used, Etc. So why do we USA people gotta have this MAF stuff? Sure i understand the concept of how it works and i actually think engines equpied with MAF's react to intake mods better than that of cars with MAP's, but hey dude, i love that Swoooooooosh between shifts. Ahhhh! I hope it's not an emissions thing, 'cause i'm gonna cram a BOV up the @$$ of a congressman responsible for this madness and let her rip and see how he feels about it! YEAH BABY! SWOOOOOOOOOOSH!

Any1 have some knowledgable insight on this subject?

MAP - much better for boosted cars. Does not respond well to CAI, filter, BBTB. Will respond some, but the engine doesn't compensate as well.

MAF - much better for NA cars. Instantly recognizes more flow and dumps more fuel accordingly. Works well with CAI, BIM, BBTB, etc.

If you're running crazy boost, you'll want to switch to a MAP system (which means standalone engine management / new ECU). However, our cars can take up to around 7 psi of boost on the stock MAF (placed BEFORE the compressor) before maxing it out. After that you either have to "fool" the ECU by altering the MAF signal using an SAFC or similar product. However, it may not last that long with 10+ psi, so you'd be better off going with a Haltec at that point.

I'm starting off with the stock ECU for 6 psi and then debating (and budgeting) for a standalone later in life.

I supossed the readings are more accurately with MAF sistem, but then why has Hyundai change the MAF configuration for MAP on the 2001 and later Betas?
Does it mean if I put a CAI on my MAP Beta I'm not going to get more than 1 or 2 HPs?

In theory, the MAF system should "see" the additional air that a CAI provides better than a MAP would. However, it really depends on how finely calibrated the MAP sensor is.

At Wide Open Throttle (WOT), there is no vacuum in the Intake manifold. The only vacuum there is the difference between how fast the engine can suck the air, and how slow the intake (stock or CAI) can deliver it. In theory, the MAP sensor should be able to read the difference in the vacuum between WOT and the stock intake system and the vacuum from WOT and a less restrictive CAI.

However...only a dyno test will tell for sure.

I just remember the Oz guys having trouble with CAI's and BTB's and them not having the same results as the US spec cars for those mods.

You're right though, if the MAP is calibrated well enough, it should see the changes, problem is, I don't think the early ones were.
