There is a loud ticking sound coming from under the engine. It's getting louder and louder. Any ideas on what it is and how to fix it?? cost?

sorry.. ticking while parked and driving. it doesnt tick when i turn it off. my father believes it is the valves.. it keeps getting louder and louder...

 

Does the tick go faster with the RPM's? i.e. when you rev it.

Its probabally your HLA's (lifters).

Try changing your oil and see if it helps. (or when was the last time you changed your oil? if it was recently, give it a week).

 

yeah i just changed the oil today.. i changed it because of the ticking but it was still doing it afterwards.

 

Yeah, its probably the HLA's... those darn things. Never have had a problem with my Corvette's valves where you have to adjust them periodically, yet all these new-fangled vehicles get problems with them all the time. Its because this generation is too lazy to adjust them methinks. lol.gif

 

HLA's can get dirt stuck in the release valves, can get an air bubble, or could be going. The good thing is you can go to a junk yard and pull 16 lifters for dirt cheap.

Let the fresh oil run through them for about a week and see if its any better. After that, replace them.

As easy as a cam swap (when you remove the cam, you just pull up on the lifter and remove it). The lifter sits between the cam and the valve. The only thing holding the lifter in place is the cam its self smile.gif
