Default Installed the Big Bore Throttle....questions and general Pains in my A$$...

All,

I installed the SR 58 mm TB tonight It was snowing VERY heavily, so I was unable to street test it yet. I am going to dyno the car tomorrow, weather permittingm and see how she runs with the minor work we have done to her (Tsudo muffler, Ractive CAI snorkle setup, NGK plugs, BB Thr.Body). Ill let everyone know as soon as I can post again.

I did have some issues with the BBTB install though. Here they are in order:

1: The TB came with ZERO instructions. Thanks to Random, the real 007, I had a general idea as to waht to expect. However, there are a few things that might need to be included with the TB. Such as...
2: Our Tib TB's have an odd setup wherein the engine crankcase coolant is flowed through the stock TB, I am assuming as an air warming device. (aka power robbing device). The new TB does not have this setup. So a coolant line needs re-routing back on itself. However much common sense might dictate this, the coolant system needs to be de-pressurized at the radiator cap BEFORE you do this....or you will get sprayed...trust me.
3: the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) that comes with the TB, at least mine, is a different part number and size wise anyway, appears to be different. When I started my Tib after installing the new TB, I had a SEVERE issue with rough and erratic idle. We replaced the TPS that came with the TB with the one off of the old TB and this helped. However, we also had to....
4. Reset the computer (pulling the neg cable on the battery and leaving it off for 20-30 min). This plus a fresh tank of 89 octane helped out tremendously. The computer on my Tib did NOT like the TPS sensor that came with the car and ESPECIALLY did not like the new TB. Resetting the computer forced it to re-learn the fuel map and incoming air volumes and adjust appropriately.

The mating plate on the intake manifold also needs 3-5mm ground off of it in order for the BBTB to be really worth anything.

Howeverm this being said I LOVE my 58mm (59 by my ruler)SR TB. Tomorrow will be a$$-dyno and then real dyno time. smile.gif We'll see what it's worth then smile.gif

All is well now, but these four tips would have saved myself and my buddy who helped a tremendous amount of time on this install. I hope Shark Racing is listening and creates some sort of site with install tips or a install instruction sheet.

Just a thought. smile.gif

Later,
Jeremy

Holy crap! I don't think I had any issues. Before I did the install I read up a little on here about re-routing the coolant lines back to each other so that was expected. Other than that it was plug and play on my 2k1. Did have erratic idle after the install, but again, expected until I wiggled the throttle cable a bit, and tightened the the screw.

Jeremy S.:

My apologies. I had posted up in a thread how to do the swap, but never turned it into an install guide.

I will do so now!

My apologies!

Random,

Hey bro...no apologies neccessary. Although I have to say part of my erratic idle issue was my fault...I put the intake midpipe, the one that has my relocated air temp sensor and the MAF sensor in flowing the wrong way (EASY to do when it is 2:30 am and you are working on coffe and pipedreams smile.gif )

Anyhoot, reversing this and again resetting the computer did the trick. You might add a 'common sense' warning about making sure that pipe goes back in the correct direction or the MAF will $hit on you. I threw an engine code and stalled almost every time at idle. Also, I ground down my mating plate to +/- 1mm from the ID of the BB T.Body. HUGE (!!!!!!!!!!!!!) difference. I DID NOT do this before the dyno, and pulled alittle under a 130/130 an all three pulls in 3rd gear. I told the tech to pull it in fourth but he didn;t hear me. Jerk. Anyway, if I were to pull it now, I would be willing to bet there would be a marked, though not massive, improvement. With that 5 +/- mm of extra metal in the way from the old ID on the intake manifold, the new TB was hitting a brick wall and throwing mass turbulence into the intake manifold. I actually LOST power from the old to the new...by the a$$ dyno anyway.*lol*

All in all I am in love with the new feel and ESPECIALLY the new SOUND. OH GOD DOES SHE SOUND M-E-A-N!!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also installed the SR Short Shifter. NICE. A little more noisy than the original, but still VERY nice, and all in all, with a Dremel and a pair of gearheads, only took about 1hr45min to breakdown and re-install. The directions online were AWESOME, as was Random's post on how to in the TSR board. I LOVE IT...like I have a new car.

Random, all this work gave me an idea for a Forum. Perhaps we should have a one way only (you can post but not reply) for people to post how to's, tips, tricks, do's, dont's, and official SR install guide. You or Yamenko could review the forum for accuracy and then if someone has an install question, they can Hit the forum and do a search. Just an idea. You could even link that forum to the SR sales page.

Thanks again for the help. smile.gif

Jeremy

Did you also port match your Intake manifold to match the new 58mm TB?

I think it's what he means when he says he ground down the mating plate. I agree...if you're putting a larger-bore TB onto a stock IM, you've done little to no improvement. Not raggin' on anyone, just stating the simple fact that replacing the TB without opening the IM only moves your bottleneck about four inches back.

Random,

Did you post an install guide for the IM and BBTB?

Not yet, I've been sorta slammed the last coupla weeks. In the up and coming files I have

BTB/BIM install guide
SR Big Brake Kit Install Guide
HID Install Guide
USA Spec Headlight Internal guide

Then www.hyundaiaftermarket.com (ultimate Hyundai links, product photos and product descriptions and prices) will be up and online. This site will NOT be affiliated with any company or manufacturer, it will be 100% independent and have links and info from ALL companies (USA, OZ, and Korea).

down the line a tad farther...
Korean Spec to USA Spec headlight converstion (to keep the USA spec light pattern)
How to rip a beta motor apart and keep all your fingers...lots of neat pics of engine internals and such.
How to build up a beta motor
