maybe those other cars you mentioned have the exact same engine but they can actually have different horsepower output. just cause they are the ''same'' engine doesn't mean that they put out the exact same hosepower at the crank.

That chart is NOT accurate. The 2001-2003 Elantra use the same motor as the I4 2003 Tiburon. They list the 2003 Tiburon as 140 claim, 134 actual. Those claims should also be held to the 2001-2003 Elantra.Here is the chart for exactly what is affected

The CLAIMS for the cars were the same. If the CLAIMS were the same, then the CRANK HP numbers for the SAME ENGINE should be the same. Engine (Crank) HP figures normally don't include the full exhaust.

I read somewhere today that the problem came from making the cars emmisions legal here. In doing so the extra cats hindered the performance. I will try to remember where that was. I keep my eye open for any more info that might explain what is going on.

Can somebody please run through the data and post a list of "actual" power numbers for the various engines and years.
I always thought there were too many discrepancies in hp numbers from Korean to US models and most recently even the Korean models have been putting down disappointing hp numbers on the dyno.

They may as well pick on some other car manufacturer too, because in terms of actual hp vs. crank hp, it looks like Nissan and Mazda have some problems too.
Here are some standouts in the SCC Magazine comparison. Where most cars tested had a power loss of 10-15% at the wheels (this is normal), these three had much larger loss percentage.
Tiburon 22% Loss
claimed at crank 181 - dyno 148
Sentra SE-Rv 24% Loss
claimed at crank 175 - dyno 141
Mazda Miata 27% Loss
claimed at crank 142 - dyno 112
BESIDES... what really accelerates your car? Well, if you drive a Hyundai that redlines at 6k or so, the majority of your acceleration power is from TORQUE.
Everyone is so obsessed with horsepower, but that is not really an accurate measure of how a car performs unless you have a 8-9k redline or more, where you can spend a lot of time in HP territory.
Hyundai actually UNDERSTATES torque on the Tiburon. It's dyno numbers showed a very small loss at the wheels compared to the other cars tested. So be thankful for your torque monster of an engine. Hyundai should correct and RAISE those numbers...

It's bull that Hyundai is admitting all this now voluntarily. The Canadian government was going to release this info after they found out about the HP lies. Hyundai got forced into this. They should be giving an option for people who have bought cars in the last 6 months to return them. Because, it is obvious that if they have a websites and a online database of VINs they have been preparing this for awhile and could have released this info months ago. Just a note for those living in Ontario, if your car is less than 30 days old you can return it for a full refund for any reason as long as it is in perfect shape. That is the law here.
Now let's wait for the show to drop on Nissan as well which is also suspected of overstating HP in several models.

Here is why I think Hyundai is only offering compensation for vehicles with over 4% overstatement. Hyundai found the Elantra to have only 135hp instead of 140hp when questioned by the Canadian goverment. This works out very conveniently for Hyundai. With a 5hp difference the Elantra comes in just under the 4%. If the Hp of the Elantra had been 134 they would have had a 6hp overstatement and been over the 4%, thus eligible for the compensation. Hyundai knows that the Elantra has over 383,000 units on the road, not counting canadian sales for 99-02 models, and is trying to avoid compensating these additional numbers. If Elantra's were included they would double the number of eligible people. The 400,000 people would go up to 800,000.
I am not as dissapointed by the hp loss as I am by how Hyundai seems to be trying to pull a quick one past all the Elantra owners.
