Default Head scratcher

On transversely mounted FWD inline 4 applications, there seems to be a split between intake/exhaust manifold locations from auto manufacturers. Hyundais, for instance, have the exhaust manifold facing the front of the car where some manufacturers have them facing the rear.

What are some advantages/disadvantages of the two styles?

More room for the cat or more distance from the fire wall with the ex manifold in the front.

Newer FWD Hyundais are mostly front intake/rear exhaust also.

Specifically the Alpha, Beta, and Sirius had front exhaust. The Theta, Gamma, and Nu engines have rear exhaust.
