Yo, Its been a while since I posted on here but my tibbys been sitting for a couple months and need to get this thing moving to a storage unit for winter. My speedometer stopped working about 3 years ago with my oem trans in it (mtx). 2nd went out then after a week or so driving 1-3 it started dropping then just stayed at 0.. Ive since put a beta 2 trans in it and swapped the entire setup out of xxxmonoxidechilds trans when he wrecked his car and still no speedo.. Well I was driving home from work a couple months ago and I noticed my speedometer started moving, It hadn't moved in 20k so I was freaking out.. It wasn't accurate at all it was bouncing all over. I didn't think much of it.. Stopped at the smoke shop go to get in, and its acting like the starter died, full power turn the key, lights go off, starter makes no noise, release key and back to full power.. I called a buddy to pick me up and i decided to try it and fired right up, I get to his house turn it off and start it 5-6 times, park it and chill there for 4-5 hours.. I go to leave and it starts right up, I drive to the gas station park at a pump and its back to the starter issue again... Well I had to tow it 3 blocks to my house and I had an extra starter that I grabbed from the yard years ago.. I swapped em out and still no start, I checked my battery terminals, which are like 6 months old and gold plated, and the car has a fresh optima red top which is currently in my winter beater... Ive swapped out the starter relay still no go and the wiring isn't corroded. Hopefully someone can help me out! thanks- Scott

Next time it gives you a no-start, go under the dash and check out the clutch pedal switch. If necessary, jumper or otherwise short the two wires together that are part of the ignition circuit. Maybe a switch going flaky?

Could be a flaky neutral safety switch, but that wouldn't explain the power dying when the key is switched to start, would it?

I'd check the wiring going to the starter, see if it's arcing or grounding itself onto anything nearby. The negative cable goes straight to the starter, so you most probably have a loose connection there (thus the intermittent problem), see if the nut needs tightened at all or if you've got a short anywhere in the system. Make sure that the connection from the starter to the ground isn't corroded over or anything.

That's my best guess so far.

Did you ever get this figured out?
I am having similar problems with my 01 tib.
Sometimes it will start great for a couple weeks, then it won't start. Tried boosting it and its not the battery.
If I bum start it (standard) then it runs normal.
No clicking noise in starter ar any noise. My interior lights all go dim to out when I turn the key all the way.
Battery is good.
I am stumped.

^^ Could be the gearing in your starter is beginning to wear out. Probably need a new starter.

Well I tried both starters in the car and neither worked... I tested both starters with some jumper cables both engaged and spun very fast. Nothing was arching... I havent worked on the car since the day it broke down, its got a foot of snow on it right now so kinda hard to work on it...

scott, i had a problem like that during summer and it was my crankshaft postion sensor. try that out. i jumped my fuel pump and relays and everything worked, the starter didn't go off but the sensor would do that. so try the crankshaft postiion sensor.
