BTW the model that they make is the 1.5way which is perfect for street application.A 2way locks up and isnt to good when making sharp turns.

Hey can you list if there are any pros and cons to this. My friends 200sx se-r has one and it won't spin the tires at all. Would i lose torque or anything like that. Would this help in the winter months(I assume it would of course) and how hard would this be to install?

email Onpol and get some more details of hsi experience. He has torn his tranny up with the LSD> It is not worth it for the LSD and then a full tranny replacement. So talk to him and he'll tell you all about it. Or ask Random. It is just not worth it! You are talkin what $830 then you have to go to a shop and pay someone to tear apart your tranny for the install! You can buy a new tranny and or rebuilt it for that much!

The install is a major PITA. It requires a complete tranny removal/disassembly.

The problem OnPol had was too much power for the stock axles. The stock axle snapped, and then the phantom grip quasi-LSD could not keep the tranny from spinning 1 free axle stub vs "jesus grip" drag radial on the other end...so it shredded the spider gears in the tranny.

Stronger axles (i'm going to get a group buy going on these shortly) would have, and will prevent the problem OnPol ran into.

Granted..we found the axles as the weak point in a high powered setup. With stronger axles and a real LSD...we may find out something ELSE breaks. Such is life when you are one of the first to put serious power with serious grip on a car. 10 years ago...the Honda boys were having the same problems.

P.S. While the tranny is ripped apart, I'll be mixing and matching tiburon gears with elantra gears and having the gears and syncro's cryo treated. Hopefully this will help them stand up to the HP. Hopefully!

::decides to finally unmask his ignorance::

What's the A/T equivalent to all this? Torque converter?

Nope.

Differentials are basically the same, no matter if you have an auto or a manual tranny. The differential is what takes the single spinning output shaft from the transmission and "disperses" the power to your two front tires. I don't know that the differential mechanisms are the exact same between the two trannies, but I do know they both HAVE a diff.

The problem with an auto is finding a way to get enough power THROUGH the transmission before worrying about breaking the diff. Large amounts of prior experience from T-H-C and FXTreme suggest the auto tranny internals tear apart before the diff would ever care. It's possible that Level 10 could correct the torque converter issue and the valvebody issue, but nobody really knows how strong the *rest* of the transmission is (input, output shafts, actual gearsets, et al)

It's likely that the stock differential may live longer given stronger axles -- the hypothesis on Onpol's failed diff is just as Random explained it: the axle broke first, which then turned the diff into shrapnel.

The best compliment to a fully rebuilt high-HP motor is a fully rebuild transmission. I have both a donor 2.0L beta and now a hybrid Elantra/Tiburon 5-spd tranny in my garage. The hybrid tranny is an excellent idea -- using taller gears (where possible) to allow the best power transfer with buttloads of torque that you get with high-boost motors.

Much obliged, Red. I appreciate the explanation. I guess I'll hold off on this group buy, then, for the time being at least. The MaDd HoRsE engine project is still in the works, and will come into play before I start tinkering with the transmission. Keep us posted on what gears you swap through your transmission...if/when I get to that point, I'd like to do some of that.
