Just had a quick question for you guys. Is it better to let the engine rev higher or short shifting when it comes to gas mileage. Say your foot is steady on the gas. When Does then engine load vs Rpm come into factor?

 

Heavy throttle, short shift is about the same for gas as light throttle until you finally get up to speed, but not as fun. Heavy throttle, shift at 6K is hard on the gas. If you're REALLY concerned, get a scangauge and experiment on your commute. Everybody's drive is different enough that it's tough to break it down more than that.

 

Get an ultra gauge. I noticed in the Accent that 20-25 miles an hour in city cruising can be done with 4th gear super lightly and get 35-40 instant mpg, where as short shifting to 5th takes it down to 18mpg. But leaving it in fourth past 35 is wasteful too.
