Fact: it increases your fuel mileage if added (1-2oz acetone/10 gallons gas) to pure gas, possibly to a lesser extent if mixed with gas poisoned with ethanol. The increase in most cases is quite small, and unless you are super-anal about your car, you will get tired of adding the additive to your gas eventually . . .

. . . like I did. Hey maybe it's time to take it back up again!

Fact. Raised mine about 1-2mpg for the couple months that I tried it. It wasn't worth the hassle though.

Yeah, and plastic cups don't work for transferring it into your gas tank..... Acetone pretty much melts straight through them.

^^LOL^^ Dam that reminds me of when I mixed thinner into a Styrofoam cup that had paint already in it. This lasted about 2 seconds then I had paint everywhere, on my work bench, tools sitting on the bench and the garage floor.

LOL some mistakes you make only once. The only time I was ever on fire involved solvents and incompatible plastics. . . plus I was seven years old an unsupervised, but hey . . . .

For the acetone I got a 2oz bottle of nail polish remover and tossed the nail polish. The bottle was the right kind of plastic and the right size for one tankful of gas. The neck of the bottle is the right size to fit in the filler tube where the nozzle on a gas pump goes in. Just had to remember to fill the bottle every time. Leaving it full but not sealed lead to a bit of melty plastic in one door pocket

DO NOT ADD THIS CRAP TO YOUR FUEL, EVER!

What some people do is use it as the fluid for their methanol injection system to lower intake temps in boosted applications.

Winter washer fluid is about 40% methanol and 60% water, not to mention whatever additives might also be in there to make it look and smell appealing or remove bugs. I would NEVER run that stuff through my engine. Just buy pure methanol and make your own water/methanol mix.

A gallon of pure methanol has less than half of the energy of a gallon of gasoline. You have to be able to deliver twice as much fuel to make the same power as on pure gasoline. There is no mixture of methanol and gasoline that will make more power than pure gasoline unless you advance timing to take advantage of the increased resistance to detonation.

Methanol evaporates at low temperatures so it is great for cooling your intake charge, but it is a terrible fuel additive.

If you're going to spread knowledge, make sure it's factual. This is especially true if you're giving input anywhere that people don't know you. Giving bad information makes a bad first impression.

If you come to a forum and bash on the cars the forum is dedicated to, come in with something cooler than a Cavalier. None of us are jealous of your Cavalier.

Have fun building cars for your wives. This is your only warning about trolling, one more troll post and your account will be banned. Keep your cool and there won't be a problem.
