I asked this over on Hyundaiperformance, but got mixed answers....

so her's my question...i plan on running 2.5" straight pipes (from cat-back) to an OEM muffler from what they said it would be free flowing till it hit the muffler, so i woudlnt' have that good of performance gains...but is there a way to gut the muffler? so it looks OEM but is more straight through?....

reason is...COPS they are getting really strict as the street racing scene around where i live get's bigger...more and more unmarked cars and camaros...

Yeah that is true, but i have the reactive muffler, i havent installed it yet, (waiting for spring) but it is straight through, it is kinda funny cuz you can look right though it, that wouldnt stop your flow, but i am not sure about hollowing out a muffler, try minute Muffler, that is where everyone from around here goes....

yes there is a way to make the muffler more "straight through" ever watch monster garage?
1. take muffler off
2. get cutting torch or hand grinder and cut a square out of the top of the muffler.
3. cut and remove how much you want from inside the muffler i.e. Baffles.

4. place the square back on muffler and weld into place.
5. voila a "more straight through" stocker OEM muffler.

OR

You can do what I did and just buy a Dynomax muffler. Not too loud. A little bit of performace gain, and I even had them put my stocker muffler tip on it. (I changed the tip later.) They are reasonably priced, and they are guaranteed for life.

i don't street race, well i did...but not in a while...like i said cops are getting way to sketchy...but here in Virginia any kinda aftermarket muffler is illegal, it is only enforced in a few places, but they can enforce when they want to be an asshole.

and canadian shark thanks for the inpunt, my dad actually just got a welder and shit should be a nice little project....now for the OEM muffler...

Unfortunately, the piping on the oem muffler, in and out is still undersized. Furthermore, the removal of the baffles and the destruction of the interior of the muffler will destroy the flow characteristics. If you want a stock looking exhaust, get a perforated core glasspack and have straight pipe ran from the glasspack to a stock looking, but still high flowing muffler, such as a flowmaster or dynomax with 2.5 in/out. If you want "bling", buy a stainless tip and have it welded onto the outlet pipe. Look at these

I would not use a hollowed out stock unit.

PS, where in VA are you from??? I know plenty of people that run more than exhaust and have never had a problem whatsoever. One friend was pulled over for speeding and window tint, and he was running a straight pipe from his header on his b16a swapped civic, and only got a ticket for the tint and speeding... and not wearing a seatbelt.

when I went to the exhaust place and had my "cat back" installed, they used the stock exhaust tip. Cut it off the OEM muffler and welded onto the new high flow one. Works and looks stock. Always remember life rule #4: Never attract attention to yourself, if you can avoid it.

You running a "coffee can" I think a nice stock looking muffler with a small tib should get you through most encounters.. worst comes to worst.. you can also paint the muffler if it is stainless to give it even more of a "Stealth" look
