i'm sorry if i missed a post explaining this but i searched for hours and found little on this.

i'm planing on going turbo, and my current transmission is not in the best shape, so i would rather just swap it out for a new one rather rebuild it, so i read a bunch on here and decided to go with a beta II transmission for the longer gears. now for the question, i looked on HMA to see the gear ratios and FDR's of the elantra trans vs the GK trans and they are different? these are the specs HMA gave me, the differences i noticed are first gear and the final drive between the GK and Elantra.

RD2 , GK 2.0 , Elantra(01-05)
First 3.462, 3.462, 3.615
Second 1.950, 2.053, 2.053
Third 1.393, 1.393, 1.393
Fourth 1.031, 1.061, 1.061
Fifth 0.825, 0.837, 0.837
Reverse 3.250, 3.250, 3.250
Final 3.650, 4.056, 3.650

is this accurate?
there are a ton of elantra transmissions locally (car-part lists 13) but finding a GK tranny i don't think will be as easy. i don't really know how much of a difference this would make, if any. as of now i'm planning to just get an elantra trans but if i could find a GK would it be worth it for the Final drive ratio?

sorry i know this is an older post but i didn't think it was necessary to make a new one about the same topic.

for the ratios in the post above, the higher numbers mean lower max speed right? which is why first gear is over 3 and fifth is under one, using this concept wouldn't that mean that the beta II transmission, which has the same final drive ratio, has a lower top speed in each gear than the stock RD 2.0L transmission? is my information correct or am I missing something?

Dont know how that could be. The 01-current? Elantras and GKs have the same beta2 and trans i thought.

^^ same as what i thought, and also thought they had longer gearing for better MPG (mainly for the elantra) . something must be wrong in the numbers i got, because I'm pretty sure my betaII had more top speed per gear than the beta I trans does. i think tomorrow i will go test drive some elantras and GKs and see.

i have a XD tranny in my car and diffrences that i notice are

a. 4th and 5th gear go higher 4th(just under 120)
b. better MPG on the highway
C. can ride at a lower speed in all gears ( can go 20mph and be in 4th comfortably)

there might be more but this is what my experience has been

If his numbers were correct then the xd tranny would allow for a lower top speed in all gears except 3rd in comparison to the rd. The gk would be a good close ratio tranny.

For cruising I would want the RD because of the longer over drive.

I want that gk tranny.

^^ Coal forge what flywheel is that?

I'll have to forward this to my brother, we just put an elantra tranny in his GK.

Main reason being elantra trannys are 1/2 the cost of a gk tranny.

Here is what I use when I want to compare transmission ratio specs :

You can see by these ratio that the tranny that will give you the highest top speed in theory is the M5BF1 of the Rd's 2.0L engines. The M5BF1 from the Elantra is close, but not exactly the same (5th gear). Plus in my experience, the M5BF2 trannys are not as strong as the M5BF1, the way the forques are designed inside. Denisst99 could tell you more, he's gone trough probably 4 or 5 of them allready. tongue.gif

where are the transmission codes printed? I remember my current transmission having gk something on the top but it was supposed to be a new rd transmission.

thanks for the info guys! This answers everything me and my brother were discussing just a couple weeks ago.
