Default Is E85 environmentally friendly?

I read somewhere that E85 produced only 15% of the pollution as regular gas, is this true? How does a catalytic converter work with E85? If your catless and running E85, is it still polluting the earth pretty bad? Is there anything else that is tricky about E85 and environmentalism because it sounds pretty Earth friendly on paper.

. . . until you realize it takes more energy to produce than it gives when you burn it.

Catalytic converters convert what there is for them to burn, shouldn't be any difficulty. If you want clean-burning fuels that don't cost an arm and a leg to make and don't destroy the food supply for car fuel, look into hydrogen. Next best is propane, which has the further advantage of being a fuel you can convert a gasoline car to use without too much difficulty.
