Cliffs: 2g oil squirters clogged open, and a bad oil pump with low pressure at idle, cause thrust bearing failure due to oil starvation. Plus bonus pictures of engine blocks cut into bits for science!
I never heard of this but never looked into it. I blame a salacious shoutbox conversation last night, requiring the obligatory crankwalk image: picture:

No good. If you get a chunk of carbon through the ring pack and it jams up one of the squirters, it doesn't matter how fresh your oil is. Or if you dropped the drain plug on the deck when you changed the oil and a little bit of sand got up in there. Or whatever. This was kindof a dumb idea for long term reliability. Oil filters aren't foolproof either, especially ones with bypass valves.
