Well here in North East PA its quickly becoming winter time. And go figure the time when I'm going to need my defroster the most it breaks! Basically here is the problem. If the car is at idle and I turn the knob to defrost the car squeels really f'in loud and will stall. And if I'm driving and turn it on the car squeels and will lose a lot of power but does not stall. Now, some guys at work told me that my AC compressor is probably shot and is causing this problem. I believe they are correct in assuming this because just a few monts ago (when it was still hot out) my AC took a crap and I had it recharged, everything seemed fine and the AC worked ok. So the guys at work told me that if I disconnected the AC compressor it could possible fix my problem. Now I don't know very much when it comes to most of the components under my hood, or where they are located. So off to WEBTECH I went to find out where exactly the compressor is so I could try and fix this until the summer comes and I need AC again. Well I'm no mechanic at all and can't figure out which thing with a belt going to it is the compressor. So can anyone help me out as far as if they feel this could be my problem and if so direct me on how to locate the compressor and how to disconnect it.

Thanks guys!

I believe the air conditioning compressor is on the back side of the engine, below the intake manifold. It must be pretty messed up to make your car stall... perhaps it is partially seized?

This also brings up another point.. on the RD1.. you have the choice to engage the air conditioning compressor when the defrost is on, it does not automatically come on like the later generation.

What do you mean I have a choice? The AC button in the car?

what year is your car? If it is an RD1.. yes, you can run straight heat onto the windsheild without engaging the airconditioner

Well the car is a 2001.... Even if I have the AC button in the car turned on and off the problem occurs.
