The stock coils will hold up against a MSD Dis-2 no problem.

I keep dreaming of a DIS-4 and 4 individual sblaster coils....*drool*

Hawaii,

Keep in mind that MSD (so far as I know) does not sell distributorless ignition coils, they only sell single coils. These are not compatible with our ignition system.

I do believe either Jacobs or Accel or someone like that *does* sell DIS coils. The difference is that DIS coils have two plug leads, whereas a "normal" coil only has one. I do believe you could retrofit a DIS4 unit and use four individual "normal" coils, but don't hold me to that wink.gif

Nice, I hadn't seen that yet. You would be the first person to try them for a Tiburon most likely, as I know of nobody else that has attempted it.

It may be a good idea to get the coils, if for nothing more than possible extended life. The stock coils will take an MSD fine, but the lifespan of a typical set of Hyundai coils is somewhere between 1 and 3 years it seems. That kinda sucks IMO, so perhaps the MSD set will live a bit longer.

Let us know if you purchase them, and how you like them.

Why are you trying to retard/advance the spark timing?

To the way that I understand things...with the stock ECU, no, you cannot really mess with the timing with the MDIS-2 (or 4)

The MDIS unit will not be able to override the ECU. The ECU tells the MDIS unit when to fire. There is no "advance" possible as it is simply a "fire now" command from the ECU. You cannot advance "now".

You could retartd the timing with the MSD unit...and yes, I'm fairly certian that the the OBD-II will complain that the spark is not happening when the ECU wants it to happen.

I was eyeballing the single outlet on the DIS coils, but I am assuming you can "group them" for waste-spark igntion (as mentioned in the DIS coil description).

The "programmable" DIS-2 unit seems a bit quirky, I would suggest simply doing the regular DIS-2. You can still retard timing (if you want) with the regular DIS-2 unit, and it will not cost so much NOR will it be quite as complicated as to need it's own external controller or software interface.

If you want to get THAT technical with your igntion, buy a new ECU wink.gif Haltech and MSD work very well together

I believe the regular DIS-2 unit also allows for the BTM / NTM (Boost timing module / Nos timing module) as an add-on component. These are a secondary optional component which can be added at any time, and will pull timing per what you're looking for.

Check with MSD about the availability of those parts.
