Looking for some thoughts/input on an issue I started seeing this week with my 5 speed. The car normally idels around 800-900 RPM when it is fully warmed up. When I am driving it around and shift it to Neutral from any gear (usually 4th or 5th though) the RPM doesnt drop all the way to idle speed. It will drop to 1100-1200 RPM and sit there. When I put the clutch in again to shift into gear, the RPM's drop down to the normal range. This does not happen every time I shift into neutral, but probably happens once or twice a trip.

Any Ideas on what could be causing this?

I forgot to mention, the car is stock other than a Header/Exhaust. This problem just started recently, it was not an issue when I first bought the car about a month and a half ago

I have observed this with AC/Defogger on or off. If it was caused by accessories running, wouldn't the RPM stay high all the time? I don't think the accessories are causing this becasue I will see it on one shift to neutral but not on the next, its kind of hit or miss

i have experienced this before but i guess i never really thought of it as abnormal.

my adivice is if your car isnt broken then dont flip about fixing it. just save money and wait for something to actually go wrong.

That is kind of what I was thinking too, but I have owned a couple of other stick shift cars and this is the first one that has done it.

If you guys dont think its something to worry about I wont lose any sleep over it

Thanks for all the responses

Mine holds revs at about 1200-1500 depending on how fast I'm going when I plop i in neutral. I was under the impression it did that for people that shift slow or don't rev match to minimize wear on synchros, just as if you are cruising @60mph and push in the clutch, the RPMS will "wait" at 1900 then 1500 then 1200.
